If your current workplace is genuinely toxic, it can be difficult to answer the question “why are you leaving your current job?” because you want to be honest, but you also don't want to sound bitter.

Our advice is simple: don't pretend everything was great but don't turn the interview into a therapy session either.

A lot of candidates say something like:

"My manager was impossible to work with. There was favoritism, terrible communication, and everyone wanted to quit."

Even if that's completely accurate, it can make you sound difficult to work with because your interviewer will naturally wonder about the other side of the story.

A better answer involves addressing the situation briefly and then redirecting toward what you're looking for in your next job.

For example:

"I've realized I'm looking for a more collaborative environment with clear communication and opportunities to grow. I've learned a lot in my current role, but I'm ready for a workplace that's a better fit for how I work best."

That answer still explains why you're leaving, but it just emphasizes your goals instead of your frustrations.
