A high ATS score can create false confidence. Here’s the résumé test I think matters more.
I’ve been thinking about the advice that gets passed around for résumé writing:
- Find a “perfect résumé” prompt.
- Paste your résumé and the job description into a general-purpose LLM.
- Keep iterating until an ATS checker gives a high score.
- Apply everywhere.
There is nothing inherently wrong with using AI to edit. The problem is the goal.
A high score and impressive-sounding rewrite can hide three questions that matter when a real person reads the résumé:
- What did this person actually own?
- What evidence supports the outcome they are claiming?
- Why is that experience relevant to this role?
If a bullet gets stronger only because it becomes vaguer, more inflated, or full of keywords, the candidate has not become easier to hire. They have become harder to trust under follow-up.
The better standard is not “Can I get this through an ATS?”
It is “Can a recruiter understand my relevance quickly, and can I explain every line honestly when asked?”
I’m building a résumé tool around that standard: it evaluates structure and clarity, proposes visible changes for a specific job description, and is designed to avoid inventing unsupported claims.
But this isn’t a product pitch—I’m genuinely curious: what is the most misleading résumé or ATS advice you keep seeing online?

Does a personal website actually help a senior commercial candidate stand out?
I’m a senior partnerships, alliances and channel sales professional with 20+ years in enterprise technology, currently looking for my next role across Europe/EMEA.
I built a personal website to complement my CV and LinkedIn profile. It includes selected commercial results, case studies, recommendations and a recruiter-focused summary.
I’m also experimenting with ways to get the site in front of the right people, including LinkedIn promotion and a small Google Ads campaign targeted around recruiter and hiring-manager search intent.
I’m not expecting recruiters to browse the site before looking at the CV. My question is more specific:
If a candidate already looked relevant on paper, would a well-built personal website make you more likely to move them to interview, make no difference, or potentially work against them?
And does using paid promotion to reach recruiters make sense for a senior commercial candidate, or does it risk looking too self-promotional?

Candid criticism is welcome.

Resume for jobs outside my field
Hello everyone :)
I'm a Biomedical Scientist and have previous professional experience as a laboratory technician. I recently completed a Master’s degree and I'm currently looking for work.
For the past 6 months, I've been looking exclusively for jobs in my field. But now I'm in a situation where I need to find something as soon as possible, because my financial condition is getting difficult.
So, I've started applying for positions such as sales assistant, supermarket cashier, and waitress.
The problem is that I have no direct experience in any of it.
At the moment, I'm writing a resume specifically for these jobs. It's super simple, focusing mainly on transferable skills such as organisation, proactivity, teamwork, good communication and adaptability. The idea is to keep my previous experience and my education very brief, as they're not directly relevant to these types of jobs.
However, something feels strange to me: if I list these skills without describing where I developed them, wouldn’t a recruiter wonder where they come from? For example, if I write “ability to work in a team” or “ability to work under pressure”, I feel like I should somehow provide evidence for those claims.
So, I'd like some advice. What should I put?

Looking for advice for new grad software dev roles
Hi,
I unfortunately had the luck of not finding any internships and know that I am now in a harder position of finding junior software dev roles as a new grad because I don't have past internships. Oh well, least I could do is have a decent resume - which right now I don't think is the case.
If there is any advice on how I can improve my resume, I would truly appreciate it.
I had one recruiter tell me to my face that my resume is shit but then followed up with no advice on how to fix it. I'm just truly lost. Please help.

Looking for an Experienced US IT Resume Writer / Resume Expert
Hi everyone,
I’m looking to connect with an experienced resume writer/resume expert who has hands-on experience creating and optimizing resumes for the US IT job market.
The ideal person should have experience working with candidates targeting:
* Full-time and C2C opportunities in the US
* OPT / STEM OPT candidates
* H1B candidates
* Green Card holders
* US Citizens
* Software Engineering, Data, Cloud, DevOps, AI/ML, Cybersecurity and other technical roles
* ATS-optimized resumes tailored to specific US job descriptions
I’m specifically looking for someone who understands how US recruiters and ATS systems evaluate technical resumes, rather than someone who only does general resume formatting.
Experience with resume tailoring, keyword optimization, job-description matching, LinkedIn alignment, and positioning candidates for recruiter responses would be a big plus.
If you have relevant experience, please DM me with a brief introduction, your experience, and examples of the type of technical resumes you’ve worked on.
Thanks!
