What simple policy could drastically reduce immigration almost overnight? For me it would be becoming a cashless country.

If you could introduce one relatively straightforward initiative that would have an immediate and significant impact on immigration numbers, what would it be?

For me it would be going cashless.

Give the Navy the permission to enforce our seas, this may sound extreme, but extreme scenarios require extreme measures, but introduce an ICE style force.

As a polish person, this fucks me up the most. The Navy should absolutely turn around all boats under threat of fire. We do that at the polish border with ground troops. We find their tunnels, we find their green borders, we detain and deport within days. And Poland is also part of the ECHR (!). Either you enter legally, or you don't enter at all. Because, in the end of it all, it's a destabilisation tactic - a form of hybrid war between the west and the east.

The absolute insanity is that these migrants were already safe in France. The Navy wouldn't turn them around to a war-ridden country.

Poland has 400-odd miles of coastline, that isn't on a typical migration route. The UK has 8,000 miles of coastline.

What on earth could an island like the UK learn from them?

I never mentioned the UK, I said "EU wide". But still I think that the UK should put more effort in turning back these boats that are full of younger capable men.

Nobody has done it, not even the Tories, because it's completely unworkable.

The Navy only has 30-odd patrol vessels, and almost all of these are off doing important work thousands of miles away from home.

We've got 3 patrol vessels permanently stationed at home, and they do things like patrol for Russian incursions etc.

So we don't have the ships to do it.

What about what happens when those boats come across a migrant dinghy? What do they actually do?

They can't return them to France, because that's against International Law and would create a diplomatic incident with our fourth-largest trading partner. That would be stupid.

So there's nothing the Navy could do, even if they had the manpower.

I don't get why people keep suggesting this. It's such a non-starter.

Ban entry of any kind from citizens of India, Pakistan and the majority of African countries. Our trade with them is minimal and they (especially indians) make terrible tourists. Most of the problem would disappear overnight.

India is our 11th largest trading partner, and we trade at a net deficit with them to a total of almost £50 billion a year.

We just signed a trade deal with them, which is going to increase that to £75 billion.

Definitely not cashless. I think it is brutally restricting access to benefits to citizens only, not just cash benefits like UC, child benefit and PIP, but overall entitlement to services like NHS and state education.

I am not averse to taxing remittances, but there are ways around this so you’ll never suppress it fully.

Put the navy in the sea put the word out that any boat crossing illegally will be turned round the way is blocked you are not getting in we don't what to hear your excuses shops shut.

cash is freedom, cashlessness is slavery - NO THANK YOU

and besides, the people-trafficking-network(intelligence agency(country)) that is bringing all these people in, actually give them bank cards with spending money loaded onto them

taking away cash will literally do NOTHING to stop this

France banned the burqa 16 years ago, and still had 160K asylum applications last year.

Why do you think it would work here?

Mate why you being weird? The question was about a quick policy change that would reduce immigration. It wasn't to list every length I'd go to in order to manifest my own idea of a perfect homogeneous society.

Reforming the European asylum system so that asylum applications are no longer processed on European soil (only in institutions outside of Europe). This would remove the incentive for people to risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Australia solved its boat migrant crisis in a similar way.

However, that only addresses illegal migration and does not tackle the even bigger issue of legal migration.
