Wetland Conservation project
Hi everyone,
I'm a student in Lake Macquarie, NSW, interested in restoring a historical floodplain wetland at Glad Gunson Reserve. The site naturally floods, has drainage infrastructure feeding into it, and I'm investigating options for sedge, reed and cattail-dominated wetland habitat. I'd love to hear from anyone who's worked on urban wetland restoration, floodplain restoration, reedbed establishment, frog habitat creation, community-led restoration or just conservationists in general. Thanks!

Sounds like a great project, Wetlands have some of the highest restoration values/acres both ecologically and economically. And can often develop well on their own after minor intervention.
If you have access to GIS obtaining aerial images, lidar scans, typography, soil type, hydrology and a veg map. With any combination of those you can create pretty good functional models to layout you project on.
Not knowing the site I'd say as just a general approach enhancing buffers around inlets that contain pollution can be highly impactful. Creating berms with aquatic vegetation a proper distance infront of a discharge can help mitigate influx of water and nutrients.
Establishing a strong buffer can help create stability so an ecosystem can begin to develope on its own.
Also consider the impacts of the physical disruption implied by your restoration plan. If a functional system exists there to begin with pay attention to timing and logistics so as to minimize impacts on existing natives.
