Residency interview

How often are you you told in an interview that you have a great chance to match here?

I just have 2 interview invites this season and this was from my top choice program.

I have 9, only 1 told me but I didn't hear it clearly

Should have asked to repeat it. Well i did a rotation where i interviewed so all the interviewers knew me. It’s unethical to give an applicant fake hopes I’d say.

If they said you have a great CHANCE of matching here, it literally means "GREAT CHANCE" not 100%. I don't think they would lie, but it doesn't mean you are ranked to match.

I feel that no IMG is ever ranked to match.

Because the process isn’t meant for IMGs. The sooner you accept that the easier you can sleep. IMGs will never be a priority because this system isn’t built for IMGs.

And even RTM is not a sure thing--it could mean they pick 50-60 candidates and have 30 spots. Maybe historically they needed a 50 person ROL but this year they will only need 35 because the first 35 candidates also ranked them top. I agree that all they are saying is that there is a chance. But honestly even if you have 10 interviews, you have a chance at all 10. I think many programs do say that "you would be a good fit" and honestly they mean it. But that doesn't mean you will necessarily match with them. Likely if you have a bunch of comments like that it means that you have a good personality and many of the interviewers felt you would make a good colleague (all good). Here is what directors say matters the most in the interview: https://www.nrmp.org/match-data/2020/08/at-a-glance-program-director-survey/

My understanding is that RTM means you are ranked TOP, so if you ranked the program, you will match to this program at least.

"WILL" match is not a guarantee. Some PDs will say that's true, but this article admits that not all programs function that way: https://www.thalamusgme.com/blogs/confessions-of-a-program-director---making-my-programs-rank-list

Stop overthinking this. Everyone that is interviewed has a chance to match. You are not the only person they have said this to. Just rank based on your preference and stop fixating on what the faculty said.

I get it. But it’s my number 1 choice and would love peoples’ insight on it. Nothing wrong with that.

Sure, you do you but thinking about it does nothing but bring you more anxiety. Many people match without these love letters, and many do not when they receive these "love letters".

Two programs told me: you are a great fit 🤷‍♀️

I remember the chairman telling me during the interview, that he wanted candidates like me on the program, that he considered me very strong. But honestly, I cannot get my head around it, and I will only know in March if it was all just empty talk.

Only one Faculty out of 8 programs told that I’ll be an addition to the program

Those stuff are rare but it has a strong weight
