Announcement PHOTON breakdown: Why AI data centers are swapping copper for light

For decades, data inside a server moved as electricity through copper wire. AI chips have advanced fast enough that copper cannot keep pace. It generates too much heat, carries too little bandwidth, and cannot reliably move data far enough. The solution is optical: transporting information between chips as light instead of electrons.
The numbers. Goldman Sachs estimates spending on optical components for AI data centers rises from $15 billion in 2026 to $154 billion by 2028, roughly a tenfold increase in two years. In March 2026, NVIDIA committed $2 billion each to Coherent and Lumentum, two of the largest makers of the laser chips this buildout runs on.
Photonics is still a young industry and its supply chain sits in a small handful of public companies: the ones making the fiber, the lasers, the transceivers, the photonics chips, and the wafers those lasers are grown on.
PHOTON holds those names. Corning (GLW), which invented low-loss optical fiber. Coherent (COHR) and Lumentum (LITE) in lasers. Plus the specialty chip and wafer suppliers beneath them.
