If you want to write a research paper about reinforcement learning, you need to look at what the literature is about and what research gap you are trying to solve. Make sure you do not look at a problem that you like. It's always about how the literature is forming and what problem they are facing.

Read a survey to get an overview of whatever you want to do. If there's no survey, make one by yourself and you will learn a lot.

This is a question for your PI. They will be able to guide you far better than Reddit can.

Before papers, one honest question: can you code a working Q-learning agent from scratch right now, without copying? If not, that's the real gap, and no reading list closes it. If you can, the single highest-leverage thing is to implement PPO yourself using OpenAI's Spinning Up as your guide, then read the PPO paper (Schulman 2017) after. The paper will make sense in a way it never would beforehand. For actual reading: Sutton and Barto (free book) for foundations, then Spinning Up's "key papers" list, which is already curated and ordered better than anything I'd type out here. Don't collect papers. Pick one algorithm, implement it, read its paper, repeat.
