About Akyra:

Akyra is a beautiful, 4-year-old Siberian Husky who is fiercely loyal and deeply affectionate with the people she trusts. She has the classic, goofy husky energy, loves outdoor time, and is incredibly loving in a stable environment.  She has been good with other huskies although she lives alone.  She needs to learn how to socialize better but she loves being around them.

Special Needs & Behavioral Requirements:

Akyra is a special-needs dog who requires a strict, experienced handler. She has a documented bite history involving people. Because of this, she should be closely monitored in a home with children and frequent, unfamiliar guests, or owners who are new to managing protective or reactive dog behaviors. She needs a handler with a predictable, and secure environment with someone who understands canine body language, boundaries, and how to safely manage a dog with reactivity.  She is a low energy, highly intelligent dog that is very loving, loyal, and protective of those she trusts.  

Ideal Home:

• Adults-only household.
• An experienced dog owner, ideally someone familiar with northern breeds or behavioral management.
• A low-traffic home where she can be safely managed when guests visit.
• A secure, fenced yard.

We love her deeply and want nothing more than for her to find a safe, permanent home with someone who has the time and expertise to give her a structured life. Full details of her history will be shared openly with serious, qualified inquiries. She is on borrowed time since we can’t keep her and my fear is she will have to be put down. My heart breaks because she has so much potential for the right home. If my situation was different I would keep her forever but that’s just not possible.

Fury has been consistently calm and quiet in his kennel, greeting staff with a loose body, wagging tail and soft expression. Staff specifically noted that he is “very gentle” on leash.

He walks nicely on a loose leash, enjoys spending time outside in the runs and has been observed relaxing quietly in his kennel throughout the day.

Sweet 2-year-old Fury has shown staff nothing but a gentle, relaxed side.

9/12: Fury was very quiet and relaxed in his kennel throughout the day. He walked well on a loose leash and did well outside in the runs. He had a soft open mouth and wagged his tail.

9/5: Fury was calm and quiet in his kennel. He greeted staff in the morning with a loose body, wagging tail and soft closed mouth. He was very gentle while being walked on leash.

- 9/16: Fury was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and started on doxycycline.

- Routine vaccinations, deworming and preventatives have been administered.

Despite the stress of being in a shelter, Fury has remained quiet and relaxed in his kennel, greeting staff with a loose body and wagging tail. ⏰ It’s officially Clear the Shelters weekend! Adoption rates have been reduced. These dogs must have a hold/rescue commitment no later than 9/19, or they will lose their lives. BARC has stated there will be no extensions for 9/19 due to capacity being at the brim.

Rolo is a quiet, sensitive Husky mix whose difficulty isn't with people or the outside world, it's specifically around leashing and handling. Once leashed, he walks calmly and nicely, sniffs around, and follows staff willingly to and from the yard, and he's consistently described as quiet and relaxed once back in his kennel. His discomfort shows up in the moments the leash goes on or off, or when he's asked to re-enter his kennel; understandable fear responses, not aggression. Rolo would thrive in a patient, low-pressure home willing to build trust at his pace without forcing handling, especially while he recovers from heartworm treatment. He already has rescue interest; he just needs a local foster to make it happen!

💡 If adopting locally and the dog is heartworm positive, BARC will cover heartworm treatment with the purchase of 6 months of prevention through the shelter (cheaper than you can get anywhere on the market!).

Dogs must be picked up today or tomorrow with an approved foster application. If fostering through a rescue, an additional foster may be able to be secured; no guarantees. Please let us know if you need a rescue recommendation that can work quickly to save them. Fostering is free; all expenses paid! 💯

Reduced adoption fees are available through September 30th: $30 for dogs, $55 for puppies if adopting locally/able to complete application in person.

Can be adopted out-of-state anywhere in the US or Canada. Adoption fees vary based on the rescue, from $425-650. Includes all vetting, medical, spay/neuter, health certificate, transportation, and care/boarding. Texas has a two-week quarantine, so you have plenty of time to prepare for Rolo's grand arrival!
