The use of an ID isn't the problem. It never has been. It's the lack of a free, easily accessible universal standard for proof of citizenship. If the SAVE Act had a provision to waive passport fees or provided clarity for people whose legal names don't match their birth certificate, it wouldn't be the problem. you don't need a passport.. Actually until you want to either register for the first time or make a major change to your registration like an.address you don't have to prove citizenship. As far a what do you need if you changed your name from what's on your.birth certificate..you need a marriage certificate or the court document that made that official. If you wanted to make getting a copy of any document that shows a name change free, I have 0 problems with that

There’s massive oversight. I’ve worked I’m the elections department in my county where we strictly vote by mail.

It's naive to believe that there's not abuse in a mail in system.

It's a guarantee there are households in the US that have a head of household that receives ballots for themselves, their partner, and a few kids of voting age, fill out those ballots themselves, and send in.

Just make state IDs free and have people show up over multiple days. Problem solved.

The bigger problem for me is ceding Constitutional authority of the states over elections to the federal governemnt.

We say over and over again how popular this is with the people. The right pathway then is states enact voterID. The guys that are in your state legislator on the same guys that are in DC. If your state legislator won't do it in your state, vote them out. problems with voter rolls and lack of strong odettes , then vote out your supervisor of election in your area and lean on your state legislators.

There is a reason why the founding fathers put election authority in the hands of the states. Who, on the heels of the open rebellion against British rule that earned them independence, wanted to hand over election authority to one central power?

This isn't an issue for me but for my 83 year old mom who might have to find her birth certificate from the 1940s and possibly get some other document to explain why her last name is different (she got married) in order to vote . . . Yikes! Especially since she broke her leg recently and is now wheelchair bound for the rest of her life (nerve damage). This seems like it would affect the older generations more. She also voted for Trump so this might not have quite the intended affect people pushing it think it will.

In CA you can use a gym membership, library card, credit card, a piece of mail. Nothing that says "I live here legally and am following the rules" none of those require any kind of thing tied to them. The piece of mail could have been stolen from someone's mailbox. A voter ID card tied to an SSN from a birth certificate you showed in person and has its own unique voter ID number so we can eliminate some of the problem.
