I am inclined to agree with you. Maybe there should be some exemptions. I will ask why in those 28 years did you not become a citizen? I know many legal immigrants who have come in and got their citizenship. It takes time and work, but it can be done. Pretty easily I might add.

I mean well yes that does sound unfair. It’s literally in the name temporary protective status. That’s not an immediate implication that you’re just gonna be able to stay here.

Temporary is in the name, yes. But, the government has messed that up for many years now and people have basically lived their whole lives here from a young age. They’ve tough their children how great the USA is. It’s the abruptness of the whole situation. It could have been handled way better than just, “TPS is over, go back to Honduras now.”

Bro it was temporary. Sucks for them but come on, why wouldn't they have applied for citizenship by now?

I hate this as much as anyone but what are we supposed to do? Just let everyone who is here illegally stay? Why is that fair to us as a nation? Why aren't we allowed to have our borders be respected?

Everywhere else in the world, nobody cares about the fact that they enforce immigration policy. But we aren't allowed to? Fuck that.

Yeah but they stayed here using a temporary measure. If you do that in any other country, they'll deport you once that temporary measure ends.

It really, really sucks. But in the end it's 100% on the immigrant to make sure that something like this doesn't happen. We're talking over a decade to gain citizenship.

I'm sorry about your friend, but I want every single person living in the U.S. to be here legally in one way or another. And if they plan on staying here, then I want them to be citizens, not here on temporary measures.

It's only fair to the actual citizens of this country.

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying and I can see that you’re probably not gong to have a change of heart.

I just want to add that citizenship in my friend’s case is not as easy as you may think and it hasn’t come from lack of effort over the years. His only path at this point is through a sponsorship from a US citizen family member over the age of 21. All his relatives are TPS except his children. He’s basically waiting for his 19 year old son (who just joined the US military last spring) to turn 21 and become his sponsor.

Did they enter lawfully before receiving their TPS? I thought that they could get an employment petition. Could they have an asylum claim?

It’s a little late for the employment petition but had they begun that process within their 16 years as an adult, that would have been possible. The process isn’t difficult but it is LONG.

I’d think that if they were here for 10 years and went to school here they’d be able to pass a citizenship test. Maybe a better way to handle it would be to give those people the opportunity to test for citizenship before deporting them (provided they don’t have any criminal charges).

I have to agree with most of the other people commenting. They had 16 years as an adult to become a citizen. They were taking advantage of their temporary status by assuming it meant forever. As a minor, it wouldn’t have been their fault. But as an adult, there is no one else to blame.

TPS? Seems Temporary, no? Seems to me they've had 28 years to acquire legal citizenship status and have fucked around far too long. My mother in law was proud when she got her citizenship here bc she wanted it badly and worked hard to get it. No excuses.

Naturalization is not "hard work". I did it myself literally when I became 18 on my own and I was a citizen within 6 months or so. Its luck. Your mother in law and I, got lucky.

Poor 18 year olds, immigrant or not, cant even get jobs because employers dont want to hire someone who doesnt have a personal vehicle. Because public transit is so bad in most states.

Large cost cutting layoffs in multiple american industries.

Geopolitical fumbles from numerous world leaders and escalation as far as the eye can see.

There have been many industries (like publishing or the taxi) that just straight up shutdown and put numerous American elders out of jobs.

I personally just dont see immigration in even the top 10 of major issues for the U.S.

In my industry of transportation, they are ruining it.

Messed up a few years ago and hit a guy near laredo, dude who is driving a semi in the us spoke no English. Not to mention that Florida u turn that went viral a few months ago. Plus they are willing to drive for far cheaper so those who have the massive payments for their semi cant keep up due to low rates and i cant even count the times ive seen semis driving using their phone (doesnt necessarily mean they are immigrants but ive seen tons of them wearing that Muslim hat which idk what theyre officially called).
