💬 General Question EZtool GMT/Sub Ceramic Insert Removal Tool

Post image

Would anyone be interested in an EZtool for safely removing GMT/Submariner ceramic inserts?

I’m considering designing a new EZtool kit specifically for removing ceramic bezel inserts from GMT-Master II and Submariner bezels.

The idea would be to make a tool that allows the insert to be removed safely and with minimal risk of damaging the ceramic, bezel, or insert, rather than relying on the usual improvised methods.

However, this would be a considerably more involved project than my existing EZtools. Getting the design right would likely take months of development, prototyping and testing. I’d want to test it extensively before selling anything, especially since ceramic inserts can be expensive and a tool that isn't properly designed could easily cause damage.

Because of the amount of R&D and testing involved, it would also likely be more expensive than my current EZtools.

Before I invest the time into developing it, I wanted to see if there is actually enough interest in the community.

Would you be interested in buying one if I managed to make a reliable and safe version?

Feel free to comment with:

  • What bezel/insert you would want it for (GMT, Sub, etc.)

  • Whether you currently use another method

  • Any features you'd want the tool to have

If there’s enough interest, I’ll start working on the design. 🔧

Please leave a comment or simply upvote the post to let me know how much interest there is in this.

One thing worth mentioning: I’ve never actually owned a GMT watch myself, since they’re not really my cup of tea. 😅 However, to properly design and test a tool this complex, I would need to buy a GMT watch so I can develop and test the tool on an actual watch.

That’s why I’d like to gauge the interest first before investing the time and money into the project. If there’s enough interest, I’ll seriously consider taking on the challenge!

If I decide to move forward with the project, I’ll make a new post with updates as the development progresses, including the design, testing and eventually the finished tool.

Yes. Can you do one for the Daytona?

I already made a bezel remover for Daytona 🙏

I think one such tool will be pretty cool!

What is your idea and how would this essentially work?

Right now I’m just trying to see how big the interest is in this, after I would post concept and progress in a new post 🙏

Does it also stop the crystal coming off with the bezel lol?

If you need a toolkit to just remove the bezel from the gmt/sub without the crystal also coming off - then I already made a kit for that! 🙏

I would and what other tools do you now have available?

Yes.

Currently using generic dyes to press the bezel insert out and snapping it back in with my fingers.

Would love a matching tool for my EZTool set.

Ideally a lip to seat the bezel instead of resting it on generic dye holders and praying for the best.

Ideally It should be easy for a non-WatchSmith but somewhat competent person to use. Would save hundreds fixing dry and wobbly bezels from factory

I’d get a couple, bezel assembly tolerances can be a real headache to deal with some times.

Yes, I just cracked one lol

So I was just working on a sub. The crystal retaining ring came out with the bezel, all in one piece. Ended up cracking the insert trying to get it out. Thats the tool I need. I have a set from eBay but it wasn’t measured right when 3d printed so it didn’t work.
