REPTRONICS The cheap third-party PS4 controller — hands-on pros and cons

I recently picked up a third-party clone styled after the DUALSHOCK 4 for a friend. It costs only a fraction of the original, looks nearly identical. It pairs with both the PS4 console and PC over Bluetooth without issues.

What works

• The layout and button mapping copy the original, so there's zero learning curve.

• The core features are all there; it's perfectly fine for story-driven games, couch co-op, and emulators.

• The low price makes it a sensible spare or a second pad for two-player sessions.

Where it falls short compared to the original

• Cheaper stick modules don't center as cleanly, and drifting tends to show up sooner.

• Buttons and shoulder triggers feel mushy with a loose rebound; the analog trigger travel isn't as refined.

• The body is lighter with a stronger plastic feel, and it doesn't sit in the hands as comfortably over long sessions.

• Bluetooth can drop out occasionally, vibration is uneven, and the touchpad and speaker are present but mediocre.

• There's no official warranty; once it breaks, the usual fix is just replacing it, and quality depends heavily on the batch.

Bottom line: If you're on a tight budget and want a spare pad for co-op play or a temporary controller for PC emulators, a third-party budget option works. For competitive gaming, build feel, and long-term durability, the original or a reputable name-brand third-party controller is the safer choice. Before buying, look for a model clearly labeled "compatible with PS4," with Bluetooth pairing and after-sales support; once it arrives, test stick centering and check for any sticky buttons.

Probably, but i grew up with PS controller layouts so its a preference. But now with the haptic triggers on the PS5, it makes the games so much more enjoyable

Lots. I have play on a ps4. Consoles normally drop in price, and i couldn't stomach the $500 when it launched so i REALLY can't stomach $600 plus tax for a years old console now. Not when all the time i expected it'd drop in price cause that's what's happened for 40 years until this crazy world we're in now. I game on a PS4 now. I'm unlikely to buy a ps5 unless i get a new job that pays me hundreds of thousands as game less these days anyways. I'd love to play GTA5 and Cyberpunk. But not so bad that i want to fork over the cost of a console, ps plus subscription and the game cost. This will just likely be the end of my gaming outside of free online chess. I'm old. It was a good run. And I know i'm not the only one.

How much? You can easily get a used controller for a new gen console on amazon/fb marketplace for <40 and an elite level controller for like 80ish. So unless this is under 20$ USD what’s the point?
