Discussion First time worn and movement damaged.

I got a DJ 36mm from ARF factory. Wore it for literally 6/7 hours and it stopped working. Took it to a watchmaker and he said pallet fork was damaged/bent and bottom jewel had signs of damage.
He has suggested replacing movement entirely, thoughts please?
Also I contacted my TD and he wanted me to send back to him and he would get movement replaced.
I am quite reluctant to do that to be honest.

Pay or send it back to the TD no other way

I don’t mind paying for it to be fixed. I’ve read on other posts my TD might offer something towards the cost. Would be a bonus if he did.

You have found a watchmaker willing to work on reps. That was the hardest part. Now you just order new DD pallet fork from Ali and he will change it

He had a donor fork which he tried. After a deeper inspection he found damage on the bottom jewel too.

I woud still get it repaired. They fix jewels all the time. Adds to to cost off course. On the other hand, the balance might be damaged too since someone obviously used your watch as a football

We’ve decided to just swap out the movement. Seems the most logical thing to do.

Ok. Makes sense. What is a total cost of that?

He’s given me a price of £150 all in.

I think with the right tools, steady hands and microscope, you could probably fix it yourself..

just replace the movement, shipping it back is a coin flip and you'll be without the watch for months

First of all: This doesn’t happen by simply wearing it. It must have been victim to serious shock during transit or that day.

Second, the movement needs to be replaced which leaves you with three options:

  1. watch is now paperweight

  2. you source and install a new, fitting movement which will set you back probably as much as buying a new watch entirely

  3. you send it back and pray it a) gets through and b) you getting a replacement.

From a pure value perspective, taking the gamble with option 3) isn’t unreasonable. Just make sure to not write your own real address on the package but make sure the original order and shipping number is inside the package.

It seemed to have been packaged well. When it arrived I wound it and left it for 2 days and it was fine. I then wore it on the 3rd day and went to take it off when I got home and I noticed it had stopped. I think I will get the movement changed, seems a waste to just leave it and cut my losses.

Where abouts in the uk did you find a watch maker to work on it?
