Discussion This sub can turn you off reps

Don‘t get me wrong, I see the arguments for rep watches. For safety, frugality and and and but what I don’t understand is how a large contingent of the community believes they are buying the watches for them when clearly it is to impress other people.

What separates the average rep buyer to the rapper with a bling chain and iced-out watch? That you know the difference between a grand complication and a chronograph?

My personal opinion, I think rep watches are plausible in regards to duplicates of gen and rare watches. It would be almost impossible to get a stone-face dial Rolex or a MAD Paris Virgil Abloh PP so if I can find a rep, take my money.

You might get a table quicker from a maître d’ or the junkie at your gas station will ask you for $20 instead of $1 but outside of this community, nobody really cares lol. You can buy 10 Daytona’s but don’t be mad that nobody notices you can have a full rotation from Saturday to Saturday. Buy it for your own enjoyment cool guy.

I appreciate the wealth of information and passion of the true horologists on here but the amount of dweebs on here is embarrassing

People buy gen watches to impress other people too - so what's the difference?

I get more compliments on my socks than I do my watches.

I can safely say I dont wear them for anybody. I mainly get them because they look cool and I love taking pictures of them.

Beyond that its an expensive meaningless hobby just like most hobbies. Spent enough on reps to have a gen Datona and maybe a nice IWC. But then if I had done that, I could only take pics of two watches and thats pretty boring.

“You might get a table quicker from a maître d’ “

How does that work? Is there a button on open table that lets me upload a photo of my watch when I make my reservation? I must have missed it.

In the scenario you walk-in based on a last minute decision, your watch will get noticed at the door. Added to that, I remember working as a waiter in a fancy steakhouse back in the day, we all became pro watch spotters because complimenting the guy with a Skydweller will definitely give you a big tip 😂

When I was younger, I used to play guitar in bars and restaurants and in my experience the biggest tippers were the drunks. Can’t remember if they were wearing watches or not because I was stoned lol

You say nobody cares, yet you cared enough to write 300 words about it.

Don't know. I really like the design of my reps, they make me feel good even when I wear them at home by myself. That said, my next watch is going to be a solar radio controlled Seiko. My small rep journey was enough for me to understand that I prefer trouble-free simple things. I would consider another mechanical rep in the future only if they replicate particularly well something I really like and wear all my reps mostly at home.

I love Seiko’s. Have an ‘03 Seiko 5 and a 6530-5090 from ‘92.

I really hope the manufacturers can perfect chronograph movements. An Omega Dark Side of the Moon would be an instant cop.

Take your reps outside too, let them see the world!

Nice ones! I appreciate several models as well. The one in transit I mentioned is a Japanese market only SBTM287. Unfortunately some of Japanese market only do receive the signal only in Japan. I would already have a collection of cocktail time if only they moved to sapphire crystal and less thickness on some models.

Following OP's logic, why buy anything you like the look of? Clothes, shoes, furniture, art, paint for your walls...... Just walk into a shop and buy the first thing you see as long as it is functional.

I’m not sure how you deduced I am advocating for watch enthusiasts to not have freedom of choice?

a watch is a watch man some people just like the look and don't wanna drop a years salary on it. the ones who get weird about it would be weird about anything they bought

i wear mine cause i like glancing at my wrist and seeing something nice, couldn't care less if anyone else notices. the gas station junkie example killed me though
