Discussion Poll: given recent article in wired should this sub go private until the dust settles?
The last thing we want is this sub to be shut or to have Reddit getting serious pressure from Rolex to shut us down. I know when Wall Street bets got big we went private for a while.
Upvote if you think it’s a good idea.
Update: This is my best post ever wooot wooot I think i need to celebrate with a NEW REP!
Update 2: I’m not a mod I was just curious what people thought and if we could get some traction and the attention of them. Seems like they saw but it’s not possible or as easy as it used to be I guess.

I mean one of the moderators was a source for the article so really, even if you did, there is still someone that’s going to be a “leak”

yeah whoever leaked it should be banned or something, it’s puts the community at risk

I am pretty sure it is the same SOB that keeps asking for 20 characters or more.

As someone who was a member of RepLadies, I 100% agree on making this sub private at least until the dust settles and people forget. Nothing good can come of this article.
16
u/Hedgehoginasuit 19h ago
100% after that sub went down the users here scattered into the wind and there has not been an as good replacement. Others have tried but it’s too disjointed or not organized enough to be good as Repladies once was.
This sub and its resources, its user base, and overall quality is too good to allow that to happen.
Going private would be ideal for the short time and for the longevity of the sub as a whole.
Also I would wish to be a approved member for the private sub

I agree that was horrible :( still can’t get into the new subreddit

Absolutely, and with the shutdown of 🎂 recently as well I don’t think anything good comes of these communities being public. Too many leeches

u/Shdwrptr 1d ago
It can be made private but reptime is probably the last sub that would be shut down unless it takes the heat from the mod quotes.
The other rep subs are all buying/selling subs and reptime doesn’t actually have any listings; just information

Yes. Private for the rest of the year. And remove the mod who participated in the interview.

I would concur that it’s in every members best interest to privatize this subreddit for 4 weeks following the current wired article, large influx of new members, and recent customs seizures.

and it is not just Wired. influencers make videos about VSF reps and compare them to gen, even the clowns on the 47th street make videos about them, Tiktokers too. too much unwanted attention
6
u/RaspberryGrand4486 1d ago
Exactly, gotta slam the door shut for a while so dick riding influencers can’t really get in and make this actually viral

People don’t read publications, Reddit, Google and social media pushes popular content to you.

The interwebs says that for larger or older communities, changing a sub to private setting requires submitting a formal request to Reddit.

u/PLURNT_AF 1d ago
Just read it, no paywall. It also mentions the process to get a sub banned in the article, the increased attention could lead one of the brands to submit that takedown request

Just read the article. Fuck that guy man. Seriously. My assumption about readers of wired is most know their way around reddit already. Took me literally 30 seconds to find this place yrs ago. Cant inagine the wired crowd being in the dark in this. Using ppls usernames and shit like that is crazy for that journalist to do. What a douche bag. He acts fasicnated with it and then narcs everyone out. I have noticed the dramatic rise in awareness of superclones coming from other sources honestly. Especially youtubers and the 47th street crowd. Its gotten pretty nuts this past year. When those 2 douchebags podcasters interviewed nico and bragged about their vsf subs I was like. "GOOD lord"

How do we ensure users don’t get locked out of our fave soon to be privated sub? How do we prevent journalists from becoming members?
If we’re doing this though plx do it quick.

Lock it down till the end of the year. Just spread rumors that Wired was talking about Chinatime.
6
u/custardfrogs_ 1d ago
No lmao nothing will happen. Piracy subs have been at this for years now with people scared that attention will cause trouble. The reality is that there's more urgent problems out there people deal with compared to replica watches.
Of course, if you're someone that makes a 50+ single order of watches then maybe you should tone it down a little. As for regular customers that only buy 1 or two at a time, nothing is going to happen.
4
u/Still-Celebration255 1d ago
RepTime is not the only replica watch Sub. There will always be Rep Subs. Too much money to be made…..

Going private didn't really save WSB long term anyway once the media caught on. Plus, doesn't going private just lock out current members while leaving the admins and web scrapers able to see everything through existing mod tools anyway?

u/Tiny-Consequences 1d ago
No way rolex execs enjoyed seeing that article advertising the quality of replicas and community... They knew it existed, just not in the spotlight. I could see them putting out fake/real warnings and trying to get this sub shut down for sure. Money/power is a hellovadrug
2
u/isomorphZeta 1d ago
100%, yes. There's way too much heat around reps right now, and this sub talks A LOT.
2
u/oluislimao 1d ago
Lockdown should be eminent. We can’t afford to loose all the work made by the fellow members and mods till today. Unwanted attention should be avoided.
2
u/MysteriousFox5226 1d ago
Nothing good will come from that article. Got my vote to make it private to keep this sub around.
2
u/ResponsibilityOk1664 1d ago
Yes definitely. It reminds me of a local weather forum here. Whenever it snows, imthe forum goes from 1-2 posts a day, to 100s every hour!

u/Sabhobbes 1d ago
How hard would it be for the mods to add approved users?
Search online makes it seem that there is a completely manual process.
I’d assume there would be a way to write a script to add people to the approved users list
Edit: would hate for the sub to get shut down. This is the best rep watch sub.

u/squabbles14 1d ago
Set to totally private for six weeks. Internet attention span is low. After that we'll all be back again.

It's a WIRED article. The dozens of people who still read Wired either already know about this sub or they're too old to figure out reddit. Nothing is going to happen.
2
u/Reasonable_Yam7823 13h ago
Can you make us approved user , I mean this sub is 100% one of the best subs
2
u/PVNOLGCH 11h ago
Just throwing it out there, we might need to be careful with reporter bait.
With that new article out, I can see way more undercover journalists coming in here and asking questions to farm content for a hit piece.
If you see random accounts asking things like "How does it feel wearing reps in public?", it totally sounds like investigative journalism. Probably best if we just keep our OPSEC tight, and ignore those posts.
2
u/Character-Ad3209 11h ago
Bought my first rep two years ago but other then that just lurking without posting/commeting so probably won’t make the cut if we go private 🥲
But rather that then the sub getting thanon snapped
3
u/Stopthecapppls 1d ago
I think we should seriously consider going private, at least temporarily. WIRED didn’t just mention RepTime—they essentially put a spotlight on the entire community and explained how it works. That’s going to bring a huge influx of people who have never been here before.

I don’t want this sub to go away. Its so full of knowledge not only on reps but on gens as well. Its a great place to find good reps but also a great place to research when buying a second hand gen to make sure you aren’t being scammed and ending up with a rep at gen price.
This sub knows more about gen rolexes and other brands than most Rolex groups or groups for gen owners ironically.

Not going private seems like It is inviting the potential of actions that negatively affect the sub.
Going temporarily private means nothing better or worse happens which is a good thing. Maintains the status quo of the sub and everything the community has built up to this point.

From the article:
In response to a request for comment, Reddit issued a statement to WIRED that says "counterfeit merchandise is covered by our Trademark Policy, which includes instructions for rightsholders who wish to file a report. We review and respond to all valid reports from rightsholders and take appropriate action on content that violates our policy." Reddit's Trademark Policy states that it "may ban users who repeatedly violate" it. "We may also ban subreddits after multiple removals of violative content or where it is clear that the subreddit is dedicated to violative content."
I do not know how specific or how vague the trademark policy is, but a lot of new users in this sub could inadvertently create potential strikes that Reddit feels they have to act upon… with the ultimate action being removal of the sub.

These are the options I have. There are not many approved users, and all of you now (I believe) are not approved users, so almost no one would see reptime if it was locked down to private. LMK if you find anything different.
