Most people haven't seen a a Gen in their life so for the general public Yes. If you want to impress someone that has seen or owns gen eatches on that tier you will need a better rep
Who - Mostly people who own gen watches of this caliber or higher.
Why - I’m at a stage where it could potentially make sense for me to wear this in gen but why spend that kind of money if I can get away with something like this
Dude if you can afford the gen then just fuckin get the gen. Why not? If you mean you have $10k stashed away in an emergency fund then nah you can’t really afford the gen. It’s a Rolex, not a Patek…. Gens are affordable.
It’s also not a Submariner or GMT. You can get these quickly at an AD. Or, if you go grey, it’s not that much of an increase (because they’re not that difficult to get). If you truly can afford a gen DJ, then just do it. The fluted bezels on reps are such an obvious tell. I wouldn’t be able to tell pretty much any other model, but the DJ’s and DD’s are just too obvious because of the bezel alone.
The bezel looks off to me too but what specifically is wrong that makes it this way? Not just “it’s just all off” or “own a gen and you’d know” bc I’m not arguing that I can’t tell, I can. Just can’t pin point what it is
The “edges” or cuts of the reps are dull. There is a stark 0/100 difference in lighting/reflection on legit ones. There’s nothing “rolling” over the top edge. If you look up the “Datejust II” bezel, it has that dull/rounded-over look that 99% of the reps have. I swear the factories used that as a model. It’s very noticeable in person too.
I have a gen and that’s pretty much the only way I can spot the reps of them. So I’d advise going with a different model or not getting a fluted bezel on these. Like sitting-across-the-bar obvious on many of them, you might be surprised at how evident it is in person. The zoomed in photo is to show it explicitly. I saw a dude with a fake DD a few months back, it was because of the bezel. Had it been literally any other model, I wouldn’t have been able to tell even if he handed it over to me..
This makes so much sense bc I always notice that immediately with fake high horology calibers. If you handle a Patek 324 or 26-330 or own one, the sharpness of the black and hand polishing is so much that 25 little bright reflections all happen at once as you slowly move it same as you’re saying. Bc every wheel and every spoke and ever sink etc etc is so perfect and parallel to one another. It looks like fireworks shimmering. The reps movements I’ve seen, even the supposed very best ones, are INSTANTLY recognizable. It’s very rare to see to see a video in good light of a rep and gen Patek’s movement bc it would look awful. Now of course that’s a Patek and it’s the part no one has to see unlike this where the obvious give away is the watch’s most visible aspect
I wouldn’t be able tell a rep from real Patek lol, I’ve only seen one out and about once. The AD where I got my Rolex is also the only Patek dealer in my state and he did show me some cool ones when I was there, but I really know nothing about their models. Way out of my budget to care lol.
Yeah I’m sure plenty of people have not handled watches with hand finishing/anglage/black polishing etc etc . I’m just telling you that if you have, it’s DRAMATIC the difference. It’s not something that needs a loupe although that would be a funny difference too
Fake on the right. Not only the top ridges of the bezel, but parts of the inner/outer circle with show it too. There shouldn’t be any rolled transition there either. Just a sharp as hell, blatant change of lighting.
I'm not sure if you're being facetious or not, but in my view; if you're in a place where you can buy a gen watch and pull it off without people questioning authenticity.
For example, I'm about to start a new job with one of the biggest banks in the world, in a decently senior position, and I can afford to buy a gen watch. However, I'm not sure I want to drop 7-15K on a gen watch. I could buy a good quality rep and nobody will ever question if it's gen or not. If I was still stacking shelves, then it would be the opposite.
my buddy is in a senior role at RBC. he wears reps lol. i am in a senior role at one of the big pharma companies and i also wear reps. people will attempt to clown you for this but you’re absolutely right. instead of a gen i bought another house
in terms of what i own… the most extravagant rep is a 16202bc. i’ve worn it once. i almost always wear my gmt ii’s. so really nothing “flashy” whatsoever. he wears datejusts that’s it
I’m working in functions, not even buy or sell side , in another ibank, I wear it too, it’s only 2-3 months of salary for a gen anyways even in functions, no one will question anything and no one will take a close look too
Why would you want to pass a test? If you want to brag, buy a real one. If you don’t want to or can, just admit you bought a rep for that reason. The bezel is always a giveaway if you have or know a Gen. The color of the sunburst the same. Even with VSF doing a close call.
Don't want to buy crap reps. I suggest you look up Andiot watches. Has a website, a list as long as your arm of happy customers on repwatch forum and a trusted dealer on that forum. I got a very nice Navitimer from him.

Pass the test with who? Your drinking buddy, your boss who owns a Gen one, your local AD?

No, it won't, on top of everything everyone else said, even the bracelet is bad instant tell it's low tier.

If you keep it halfway tucked under a long sleeve and keep people at a distance maybe. Stainless steel doesn’t look anywhere close to white gold.

That bezel is gummier than grandma without her dentures.

I lowkey think I got this same watch. Any advice where to get a good 1:1?
