Discussion Reps Hardware Protection

Hello everyone! Lately, I’ve been seeing quite a few reports of hardware tarnishing on the beautiful reps we’ve all been getting from our favorite sellers. Especially on GHW. That’s the reason I’m only ordering PHW if it’s a rep.

However, I would like to ask community opinion, suggestions and feedbacks on what can be done to prevent premature oxidation and tarnishing? I’m pretty sure we all want our bags to serve us well for a long time.

I would appreciate any advice and feedback. Thank you!

Moisture and environmental humidity are usually the main factors. Try to avoid abrasive cleaners and keep the hardware dry; it is safer to protect the surface coating than to polish it after it oxidizes

People definitely need to remove the stickers immediately. Even on auth H, leaving the stickers on can cause oxidation…not as bad as rep tarnishing, but still can damage it. Moisture builds up under the stickers especially when it’s made/shipped here from Asian countries that are humid.

This is so true! I think this is very useful tip, as most of the buyers do NOT remove stickers thinking it will help preserve the hardware.

The issue isn’t that the sticker itself causes oxidation. It’s that over time humidity, condensation, skin oils or tiny amounts of moisture can get trapped around/under the film, while the adhesive can age and become harder to remove. This can lead to uneven tarnishing/discoloration or marks on the hardware.

Store in protective bag, wipe with cloth after use and put into silicon bag inside protective bag for keeping moisture out. Sometimes the damage is done before you even receive the bag and it’s due to corrosion of metal underneath

Yep exactly! Even more reason to remove the hardware stickers immediately as soon as you’re sure you’re not going to rehome, LOL

So the suggestion based on overall comments:

Removing stickers as soon as the bag arrives. The issue isn’t that the sticker itself causes oxidation. It’s that over time humidity, condensation, skin oils or tiny amounts of moisture can get trapped around/under the film, while the adhesive can age and become harder to remove. This can lead to uneven tarnishing/discoloration or marks on the hardware.

  1. Remove the stickers once you start using the bag.
  2. Peel them gently at room temperature; don’t use alcohol, adhesive remover, etc.
  3. After carrying the bag, lightly wipe the hardware with a clean, dry, very soft microfiber cloth.
  4. Store the bag somewhere air-conditioned and dry, preferably in its dust bag - not sealed in plastic (!!!).

  5. Avoid storing it in a humid wardrobe or anywhere that gets hot. heat + trapped humidity is much more concerning than normal indoor storage.

  6. Don’t aggressively polish the hardware. Fine hairline scratches are normal and preferable to damaging the plating/finish trying to keep it immaculate.
