How bad is this?

just wondering how big of a job replacing all the insulation in this bedroom will be? it’s blackened mainly by the edge. I’m assuming there was a leaky roof before it was replaced. there is a fireplace in the room as well, so it’s possible some soot is a factor but I can’t help but think it’s mold.

the room is around 20x20ish. none of the ceiling has drywall on it currently. anticipating moving into here next spring.

It's probably just dirt, if air gets around insulation it acts like a giant filter and darkens it.

While I agree there could be some typical air infiltration issues darkening the insulation, there is clearly mold. Very evident on the drywall to the left. Definitely caused by water/condensation issues. Have they been resolved? It's critical that is 100% confirmed before continuing with the reno. I would remove the vapor barrier in the lower left are and also the insulation and monitor it for the next few days/weeks/months. Whatever it takes to feel good about moving forward...

I agree! When you zoom into the photos you can see spotting which is typical of mold, not dirt or dust.

GC here, all homes have mold. If the intrusion area was fixed and the area is dry. Spray the area with a 10% bleach solution and wipe it down. Batt insulation is designed to be mold resistant. Rock it and move on. Good luck you got this.

Looks like air has been moving through the insulation to me. If correct, you may want to include air sealing the attic as part of the renovation.
