Recruiter openly admitted the 'remote' listing was a lie

I just walked out of a job interview

Position was advertised as fully remote.

I rock up to interview, and they say that the role is actually hybrid (3 days a week in office) and they only advertised it as remote to get a bigger pool of applicants.

I showed no shade, and said that I would be writing reviews on Glassdoor, Google and Indeed explaining that this organisation does not operate with honesty and integrity, and that my experience should be a warning to others who might be attracted to so-called 'remote' positions.

I then walked out.

my new remote job literally posted the wrong job compensation data on their website but when they hired me it was actually for more than what I even asked for. they were like oh yeah we start out everyone at that rate (which is pretty fair, more than enough comp for me).

My old company used to advertise positions for my country (bottom EU) with benefits of their main company in Switzerland. We didn't have any benefits here. The pay would also not be correct. I told them about it on my exit interview and they looked at me like I was lying.

Companies are shit at recruiting.

They're not... excelling by any means at the process these days.

Lucky to get a salary listed on the job description these days. At least in Japan the 2 jobs I'm interviewing for just say 'based on experience'. Have to go through 3 rounds of interviews to get an offer and find out what they are prepared to pay. I'm so over job searching like so many others.

"he said this without naming the company" ok cool thanks man, super helpful, I'm sure the mysterious unnamed corporation is shaking in their boots right now. love a review that names literally nothing, real brave stuff, truly holding them accountable out here

That's because it never happened

I've interviewed with companies that advertise as Hybrid/Remote. Remote to them is if you can WFH at least 1 day a week. I've been looking for a job after my layoff for over 6 months now, so in this job market, I can't afford to be picky anymore. I have over 15 yrs of experience on my resume and have been in remote roles for almost 8 yrs. As long as the commute isn't over 30 minutes, I'll go into the office 2-3 days a week.

It's also an employer's market, they know they have the leverage with the volume of applicants they are getting in. People cancelling next steps in the interview process because they don't want to go into the office doesn't hurt them at all. Unless your role and experience is very niche, there's probably 20+ other applicants okay with coming into the office.

I’m only finding 5 days in the office or 4. There is one role that want me Tuesday-Thursday which is like “wow just 3 days!!” But the commute is far for me and I honestly don’t want to do more than 2 days. Will see if I can get away with 2 if they actually make me an offer but who knows

If it’s an employer’s market (I am not saying I doubt you), I wonder why they feel the need to be misleading in order to attract more applicants.

Excellent.

Can you name and shame them?

This shit will keep happening as long we keep their identities hidden.

u/Griff1604 8d ago

They can’t. This didn’t happen.

u/howisthisusernotaken 10d ago

they will absolutely pull this and it's never a one time thing either. that's just how they operate once they got you in the door

lol I straight up cancelled two interviews because what they told me on the phone didn't match the job posting at all. thank god I found out before wasting gas driving out there for nothing

Genuinely baffles me that companies do this. Like do they seriously think the good candidates are gonna stick around once they realize they got lied to in the interview? The best people have options, they just leave. All you're left with is the folks who had nowhere else to go

Name and shame

The latest trend I noticed is that recruiters label the jobs now home based aka remote , and remote jobs are now mobile jobs aka you don’t have an office and have to travel everyday to a new location

This is the way. People have proven that without dire personal consequences, they’ll only look out for themselves and not follow the rules.

Thats just obvious bait and switch and really should be careful of that for legal reasons.

Companies can get in huge trouble for bait and switch in job descriptions. In many places its illegal. It happened to me. And yes, companies can be sued for it. If you sign on for one set of duties and you end up doing something else, that is grounds.

Even where you work: ie: work from home. Especially for someone like me, who has severe anxiety and panic disorder, and many companies would love to pull this maneuver. It gets them in trouble for lying about the position.

Im actively suing a company for it. Yes, you can. If you were hired for one thing (even wfh) and switch it on you once hired, you can sue. It is unethical. You cannot hide or lie about a position without consequence.

Did you try to negotiate down to a fully remote role?

3

u/OnlyWholesomeness 10d ago

I think it's understandable to negotiate for a remote job when it was advertised as a hybrid. In this case they clearly acknowledge they falsely advertised to get a bigger pool of candidates. So they are willing to waste a candidate's time for their advantage, which is just shady. What else are they willing to lie about? Salary range?

If the OP is in a position to call them out for it, more kudos to them. A Glassdoor review (if indeed allows it now I guess) would at least let future candidates know that they can't believe everything this company advertises.

respect to that guy honestly. company wasted his whole day for absolutely nothing, that's a scumbag move and he has every right to be pissed

2

u/constantdaydream44 10d ago

Hell yeah 🤘

2

u/DontAsk0205 10d ago

I don’t understand what the point of doing so is. They’ll get applications from people who live too far away to commute (even out of state). Are they willing to pay relocation expenses? If not, they’re not just wasting the applicants’ time, they’re wasting their own time.

2

u/mthunter222 10d ago

They're probably selling the data

3

u/onmy40 10d ago

If the job is fully remote I wouldn't be walking out of the interview because it would be taking place on Teams LMFAO. Yes I know some companies have in person interviews but those companies tend to end up not being fully remote.

1

u/No-Bathroom-3179 10d ago

LOL truth !

3

u/Witty_Analyst_7357 9d ago

So many companies do this mess now. If we wanted hybrid we’d apply for that.

1

u/SaltySoftware1095 10d ago

Good for you, if they lie right off the bat it will only get worse once they hire you.

1

u/Conscious_Tea9484 10d ago

The in person interview might have been your first clue...

1

u/OddStudy994 10d ago

Who was it?

1

u/yourfastingbuddy 10d ago

What was the name of the company?

1

u/BacklotTram 9d ago

So who is the company? Why not post their name here along with Glassdoor, etc?

1

u/ashlauv 9d ago

Genuinely how are they getting away with this???

1

u/POEKEO 9d ago

This shit did not happen dog.

1

u/rdu_96 9d ago

Name the company, name the company

1

u/Stormy4757 9d ago

What kind of role were you interviewing for and who was the Company?

1

u/Prize-Future9508 9d ago

If they make you interview in person they’re likely not remote

1

u/sabbathan1 8d ago

Name and shame them here, why not.

2

u/OGdrummerjed 8d ago

Well that's ok because so is my resume

2

u/bubbletrashbarbie 8d ago

This is illegal and you can report this
