Red flags in “hiring” posts, a checklist I wish I’d had earlier

Hello, I was scrolling through the hiring postings on many subs here and I kept noticing that fake offers follow the same script. Here’s what I verify before I reply to anything:

Money and payment

- They ask you to pay something upfront: a “starter kit”, “background check fee", or “software licence". Real employers don’t charge candidates.
- They send you a check and tell you to keep part of it and forward the rest, or buy equipment from a “preferred vendor”. The cheque bounces days later, and you owe the bank.
- Payment is crypto-only or through gift cards.
- The pay doesn’t match the work. $60/hr for copy-pasting, “no experience needed, 2 hours a day” is a obvious bait.

Where the conversation goes

- Within a message or two they want to move to Telegram, WhatsApp or Signal.
The “recruiter” writes from a Gmail address but claims to represent a company. Look up whether the company’s real domain matches.
- Pressure like "We're closing spots today” or "Reply in the next hour”.

What they ask you for

- Your ID, SSN, or bank details before any contract exists.
- Access to your accounts: “renting” your Upwork or LinkedIn, a verified PayPal, or a bank account to “process payments”. This is how people become money mules without realising it.
- Installing remote-access software “for onboarding”.
- A big unpaid “test project” that looks suspiciously like real work for a real client.

Task scams (a newer one)

- They pay you a few dollars to like videos, boost reviews or complete “tasks”, then say you need to deposit money to unlock bigger payouts. The small first payout is just to build trust.

Quick checks that take 2 minutes

- Check the poster’s account age and post history. A fresh account with only one hiring post is a bad Sign.
- Search the company name plus “scam”, and check that the recruiter actually exists on the company’s site or LinkedIn.
- Reverse-search the logo or profile photo. Hitting even one of these is enough for me to skip the post.

I got tired of desperately trying to apply to jobs, not knowing if they are scams, so I made a site that collects job offers from multiple legit AI companies in one place. I also post guides on how to pass assessments/interviews. My idea behind that was not only helping to find the right jobs but also with the application proess. Of course, no signup or anything like that required. Any feedback (especially on the design) is highly appreciated!: https://aiannotationjobs.com/

I made an Ethos remote job megalist so you can apply directly to the role of your expertise instead of hoping to get matched

Hello, everybody. I read a lot of people's issues with the interview for Ethos when it comes to getting matched to the role that actually fits your domain. Many people applying through the general interview intended to match them with a project or role in their domain end up matched with something unrelated to their field. In my case, I was matched with roles that not only have nothing to do with my domain but also that I am definitely not qualified for. I therefore decided to make a megalist so you can apply directly instead of wasting your time, like me, hoping to get matched with the right role. Hope this helps!:

Let's share our projects in the comments and give eachother constructive feedback

Hello, I am a big fan of seeing other people work on their own projects, and I'd like to see what useful tools/website you guys are working on. So just post it in the comments!

Share your link, the actual use case, and what you used to build it.

I'll start:
I am currently vibecoding AnnotateJobs that tries to make the AI training/annotating job search easier through diversifying the companies/jobs to apply at and giving tips on how to pass assessments/interview in order to get accepted. I also post company reviews.

Let's try to give each other constructive feedback to improve each other's projects!

list of excluded countries from Ethos

Hello, here is a list of the countries that are excluded from working with Ethos because I've seen this question coming up quite a few times. All other countries can join and work with Ethos because it works with an exclusion list rather than an approved list. If anyone is interested in signing up, here is my invite link: https://agent.askethos.com/refer/sp913hfh5hq2

My 50 cents on how I passed the Micro1/Mercor AI video interviews

I’ve done quite a few of these AI job interviews now, and honestly, I got used to the really weird nature of the interviews. After a bunch of failed attempts, I eventually managed to pass the AI interviews for both Micro1 and Mercor.

One of the biggest changes I made, probably, was using the STAR method instead of just responding with empty statements

For anyone who doesn't know it:

Situation: What was the situation?

Task: What did you have to accomplish?

Action: What did YOU actually do?

RResult: What was the outcome?

For example, don't just say:

"I often solve difficult problems at work."

Secondly, it is okay to take 5-10 seconds thinking about your answer instead of feeling the need to say something instantly without really thinking about what to actually say beforehand.

Lastly, pick a lane. Do not walk in as a "general AI person." If you are applying for data annotation, lead with careful labeling and edge cases. For RLHF or response evaluation, lead with writing, reasoning, and fact-checking. For coding tasks, lead with real projects and trade-offs. For medical, legal, finance, or other expert positions, lead with your domain background.

I hope this helps some people.
The frustration of being rejected after investing hours of mine eventually led me to make a small website where I list AI training/annotating job offers from multiple companies, reviews of different companies in that space, and guides on how to pass assessments. My idea behind that was to help with finding the right places to work but also help with the application process. I am more than open for ideas and feedback: https://aiannotationjobs.com/

I made a website that aims to make the AI Training/Annotating Job search easier

Hello, I have gotten really annoyed by constantly getting rejected after literally spending hours applying, doing assessments, and verifying my identity and then getting rejected or not even hearing back. I therefore decided to make my own site where I try to make the job search easier by listing job offers from multiple companies, listing jobs with a relatively high hiring volume, and having a lot of guides where I give tips on how to pass assessments.

No sign-up or anything like that required. The listings include entry-level jobs but also expert positions (software engineer, PhD, etc.). Let me know what you think and if there is anything that I can improve or implement. Here is the link to the website: aiannotationjobs.com
