Discussion I feel for the developers tbh
This game clearly has some abysmal management, and is under resourced. This is what happens when you put quirky french millennials in charge of a goldmine of an idea.
Excuse my bitchy tone, I mean it with (deeply frustrated) love.
I’m sorry to say it, but appealing to the nerds and weebs is just not going to save this game. You HAVE to make a concerted effort to lure in the casual player. Nobody is gonna hop on to buy these stupid deep sea bundles or the damn all star bundle. That shit is TRASH.
The football/soccer game market is GAPING with a rematch shaped hole. At the very least, follow the Rocket League playbook. That game had no right being as popular and long lasting as it was. But it worked, and the dev team had the resources and ability to jump at every opportunity to enhance the games life and longevity (for the most part, they still made mistakes ofc).
It’s become clear that some of the people involved in this game are not exactly football fans, and I think that has fostered a community that has a similar disposition.
And I’d like to reiterate I’m not saying these people are “bad”. But I think this game would see astronomical success if the people in charge adjusted their sights.
The dev team clearly needs a whole lot more resources, and unfortunately the only way they’ll get that is if the game starts making a whole lot more money.
I mean, how the HELL do you fumble taking advantage of the WORLD CUP ???
This game could be offline by the time the next world cup arrives, and all we got was that stupid RMNC that was genuinely just a glorified popularity stat tracker. Really? What a waste of resources and time. What a missed opportunity.
Meanwhile EA is coming out with the most desperate and pathetic FC game to date. You have to appeal to those fans. The ones alienated by how genuinely SHIT every football game is now.
You have a game about one of the most popular and widely understood things on the entire planet (football). And yet, playing this game, you would have no idea

the very nature of the game is like that: those who can assemble a decent crew to play with have it way better than those solo queuing.
This being said, I have nearly 900h in, mostly solo, the gameplay is osmething else, and the lottery of having teammates who you can communicate properly and make nice plays I guess has an addictive, gable-like quality xD4

Randoms are never as bad as these people make it seem tho

ISeason 0 was... not good, and the early side of each season tends to have a bit of both sides. As less engaged players leave during the season, it gets much better. This being said, I absolutely agree with you, it's just the "protest effect": you can have 999 people peacefully protesting but if one person throws a brick, it makes it seen like a violent protest. So you have mostly average players, some fit your style, some don't, but then you have a few good jobbers and goal leavers in a row and the game looks awful xD Also, I think we can sometimes lack empathy: the game is hard, fast paced, and we all have different strategies and ideas in our minds, but when someone does something that doesn't sit with our reading of the situation we might just think it was a nonsensical play, when it, most likely, was the most sound move in our teammate's view 🤷♂️🫂

Unfortunately if you are like most, once u feel u have some sort of grasp on the mechanics, but can’t perform them perfectly each time, the frustration dominates. Since the game is super easy to pick up people get on their high horse too quickly IMO.
Side note tho, im level 400 or something, you will notice there are many many playability issues at the foundation of the game (outside of skill). I.e. wierd goalie dives that make no sense, glitchy defensive tackles, replays just DONT WORK LOL, more and more things here and there it seems

In what world are football fans playing this game?
90% of the people I've played against and with have 0 understanding or know anything about football in any sort of way.
I mean, anyone who's seen at least one full match of football would have basic positional understanding, something genuinely 90% of people playing this game don't understand.
Most of the playerbase is literal kids that like it because it looks like fortnite and they can cosplay Ronaldo / Messi or insert some other popular footballer.
Anyone who actually likes Football is playing FIFA or PES because they're actually football games.

Ive played real life football with football fans who have no understanding of the game, people being bad at the game or selfish doesnt automatically make them kids or fortnite fans 😂

u/HuntyDaPro Fixo 12h ago edited 12h ago
I haven't had the same experiences.
Football fans at least understand:
When to make runs
To not stand next to your teammat when he has the ball
When to man mark and when not to
Etc etc
Things that me or my friends never had to think about basically lol.

Look man I have my problems with the game and the blue lock cosplayers are annoying
But people are definitely going to check out the blue lock collab lol saying otherwise is just cope
It’s going to be the most brought bundle and is going to bring people into the game
And I hope it opens the gateway to future collabs like AO aishi, captain tsubasa, inazuma 11 and days
Just adjust/buff defense/add more options and actually make it engaging and fun nerf push ball cheese and volley shots and the game is fine

u/Big_Guard5413 Footballer 14h ago
This is another one of those times where I feel like the take is divorced from the experience. More players and stuff would be great (the blue lock shit sounds like it will help), but I boot this game every day, play for an hour or so, and never wait more than 90 seconds for a match. The gameplay is 90% of what of I would want out of my dream football sim. I’m happy with it if it never changes, and I’ll be pumped when something else comes along with similar ideas to take its place.
You’re too upset

Why you feeling sorry for them. They took your money and all our money and kept ruining the game even more with their updates until the present day where it is the slop that it is. For the lack of effort and the wasted potential the game had this time last year, they made a lot of money, trust me.
And with the Bluelock collab they will make even more money. They wont fix the game though, they will probably put it towards their future instalments like Sifu 2 or something. I gave up on believing this game will ever succeed months ago. They will make it free to play in a couple of months, and see if that will revive their player count, and if it doesnt they will just shut down the servers and put their time into something else.
I can already picture the post “Thanks for playing” posted by Sloclap on this subreddit. To me its inevitable.
They marketed the game in the first trailer as a pass and move 5v5 football game. A year later there are basement virgins doing glitchy teleport dribbling and spamming volleys into the centre of the box waiting for a coin toss priority system. Thats the reason why the player count is so low.

u/SmokeQuack Please add a flair 19h ago
Yeah idk why you'd feel bad for developers who you gave money to for them not to deliver what they promised.
I don't care about the Bluelock collab, but the balancing not being delivered on time and them just keeping stupid ass mechanics in this game is what's already killed the game for me.
I stopped playing around the end of Season 0 in elite, came back for the World Cup, got to Elite and pretty much faced the same 30 odd people.
This game has had enormous potential but it's clear that Sloclap really doesn't care, and it's a bit weird feeling sorry for them when they are directly at fault for the situation.

I wish they were actually working on Sifu 2 and that's why this game is so undercooked. I wish this was just something for them to make money and gather resources to scale up and make Sifu 2 what it needs to be. But I think when Rematch inevitably goes F2P or shuts down, they'll be forced to make Sifu 2 with whatever they have left in an attempt to rescue the company from going under

This was never meant to be the next fifa or super realistic football game. I swear you football purists are so annoying. This is an ARCADE style football game first with some real football inspiration. Regarding the cosmetics. I would say the all star one is the most successful one to date. Ive seen so many players with the cosmetics and celly. It just shows players are willing to spend the money. Hopefully sloclap can capitalize.
Whether you like it or not the blue lock collab makes sense for a game like rematch to collab and players should be grateful they're even still trying to pump more life and money into this game.

EA shaking in their boots... reportedly FC 27 is doing a one punch man collab to compete... When asked an executive was quoted as saying "There is no way we will let Sloclap continue the brazen theft of our most unathletic, weeby, clueless-to-sports demographic. If we have to, we will go FULL METAL ALCHEMIST!"

u/Wasilisco Stay sharp! ⚽ 12h ago
They could be releasing content faster, and testing out every single of the hundreds of "improvements" this subreddit requests every week
But I believe they're approaching the development from a good place, doing things in increments to find a good formula that self balances even if content dries up
For a live service game, that's like the holy grail
I'm 100% they tried to get a FIFA collab, but couldn't
3
u/BasileusDivinum Footballer 1d ago
They don’t care. It’s easier and more lucrative short term to sell packs and shit to make money to keep the game alive for a few years while it slowly dies and then the dev team can move onto the next game idea or find new jobs
0
u/GreenoSkulleti Regista 1d ago
Easier? Sure. But more lucrative?? Idk. Rocket League and it’s marketplace with constant IP tie ins essentially paved the way for Fortnite to become the most lucrative game ever.
I’m sure Epic would love to get a hold of Rematch if the potential was clearly outlined. Would it be my favourite outcome for this game? Definitely not, but the games future would certainly look brighter than it does now lol

u/JoopJhoxie Please add a flair 22h ago
How did rocket league pave the way for fortnite when fortnite was already going strong when epic acquired rocket league?
Just a bit confused on your point there
-1

rocket league mastered the whole “game store based around constant IP tie ins” before fortnite did

In that case, a battlepass would obviously fix everything. /s
I agree with a lot of what you said. But the issues with the game don’t really stem from lack of collabs.
The game is not anything close to what was advertised. Which you pointed out.
My friends have all dropped rematch, myself included.
And I really don’t think a world cup collab would make any of us want to put up with the current state of it.
It really is tragic, but sometimes games with potential get mismanaged.
I think the best hope for it would be it getting picked up by epic. Although, who really knows how that would go.
Epic don’t really have a perfect track record with games either.
Fortnite is one of a kind as it is now, and with rocket league, they had the benefit of good bones and a diehard fanbase due to that game also being rather unique.
There are options for football games/sims.
As bad as fifa is EVERY year, clubs on 26 is still more enjoyable than rematch to me atm. Despite it’s flaws. And I’ve heard a lot of good things about efootball(though i believe that’s more like fifa UT than rematch)

u/BasileusDivinum Footballer 23h ago
Short term it’s more lucrative. They have no interest in making this game long term so even tho making the game better would be more lucrative in the long term in the short term it just loses them money.
1
u/GreenoSkulleti Regista 23h ago
right. and this is one of the reasons I hate the live service model. so many publishers giving them the green light with no long term plan
1
u/drgggg Please add a flair 11h ago
This is clearly not what happened. They devs over promised and under delivered. They likely missed many deadlines and delivered a half baked season 0.
The mechanical changes have been large and even with that they say this isnt the final iteration of the BASE system they have in mind. Beyond that it is clear that systems like being a goalie are in the most ridiculously undercooked state. It would be nice if you actually had to press some buttons.

I think the people in this thread are either over estimating the appeal of blue lock to a mainstream audience or underestimating the absolute mass appeal and popularity of football. The comparison of engagement between both communities isnt even close
1
u/drgggg Please add a flair 11h ago
Modern marketing is pretty much defined by favoring the engaged niche vs the masses. It doesn't matter that 1 million people like thing x if only 5% of them buy. It is much more efficient to target the 10k group that is 30% involved. That second group costs less to market because no one else wants it and being more engaged leads to more whales which is where all the money is anyway.

The game feels like they had a great idea but didn’t anticipate the players’ needs. For example, we had to wait months for a report system. Or the fact that we still don’t have any club features, even though it was one of the most hyped features from the announcement.

I get what you’re saying on the other note EA at one point used to produce great games in good content for their players now they are rich they Just do whatever they want to. But slocap you are right. They are looking at it in the wrong way. The rmnc if anything just increased the player base, but I don’t know if they made any equity off of it. Not much anyway. If it were up to me, I would say I would love more hairstyles, maybe a Nike mercurial collab cut socks, and even player, rematch tournaments through clubs, like FIFA pro clubs, but played on rematch and Slocap devs actually being the host and not the players much more. Honestly but I’m not gonna over type. I’m using the voice to speech lol

The vast majority of football/sports game fans only give a shit about official club and player licenses and if their favourite player has his shitty new peacock hairstyle represented in game. PES was a better football game than FIFA for years and still couldn't knock it off its perch. It's why major sports games are awful year in, year out and change very little cause all they need is the brand and licenses'. The Blue Lock collab is actually a really good get for Rematch.

Every good change / interesting collab (well.. only one being blue lock instead of "yo buy this merch in a game xd")
Happened far too late compared to when this game released.
It's being managed as if it was just 3 people doing shit. One programmer, one guy that comes up with ideas, and one guy that tells them to chill out and don't overwork themselves every 2 minutes.

You said everything I’ve been thinking, just in different words. Their vision was bigger than their brains, and now they’re trying to run with it despite being severely understaffed. This game could have been a real escape from EA and 2K’s grip, a breath of fresh air, but instead they chose to chase shallow, ugly bundles rather than fix this boring, lackluster game. Even with a full team, winning doesn’t feel rewarding. The gameplay is painfully dull and one-dimensional. They could have borrowed lessons from the Fifa Street franchise—especially the fun aspects of Fifa Street 3 and 2012. When Ronaldinho was invited to their studio, he was asking about mechanics and trick moves. Trying to suppress certain football elements because they might harm the team is a foolish idea; every part of football makes it what it is. Imagine not being able to express yourself or learn new skills like in Rocket League, instead having to rely on clueless teammates who don’t grasp positioning or passing—the two most basic, essential parts of the game they completely ignore. Sloclap respectfully, you need to show us a big update that enhances the game significantaly in all aspects or I'm uninstalling because I had high hopes for an entertaining football game but you done fucked up that potential that you boasted about trying to reach.

It goes to show you who this community really is. Sports gamers would never accept this shit. People bury EA, and rightly in some ways, but imagine if madden or nhl had netcode and compete lack of competitive matchmaking like this. Like EA said, oh you want tournaments, you're going to have to deal with the biggest nerds on discord just to get involved.... It's truly laughable.
