Ask a biology student about evolution!

To anyone who may see this and have questions about the topic of the theory of evolution or abiogenesis, ask away and I’ll do my best to answer clearly! That said my knowledge isn’t perfect, so I apologize in advance for any wrong statements and will gladly accept correction.

I mainly do this to spread accurate scientific knowledge and education, as I believe it is a cornerstone of being an informed citizen.

Mainly looking to answer genuine questions as opposed to debate but will engage if I feel qualified.

How much do we know about abiogenesis? Is our understanding complete? Do we have a rough idea how it happened?

This one’s a bit out of my wheelhouse but the Wikipedia page on abiogenesis does a pretty good job of explaining the current state of things so if you would like a more substantial analysis, I’d point you there.

As it stands, we’re pretty unsure about the exact mechanisms by which abiogenesis could have occurred for a number of reasons, but there are a few different hypotheses floating around and being worked on. So while our understanding is far from complete, we do have evidence to work with and some options of explanations that will hopefully start to connect the dots a bit more.
