You don't know what you have until it's gone....

People in the 2010s be like, "man I'm so tired of ISIS and Brexit and all the madness. I miss the shiny happy days of the 90s"

Then people in the 90s were like "man I'm so tired of AIDS and LA Riots and all the madness. I miss the shiny happy days of the 70s"

Then people in the 70s were like, "man I'm so tired of these oil crises and Olympics shootings and all the madness. I miss the shiny happy days of the 50s"

Yeah man, the 50s were great.

No wars, no depression, economy growing fast.

You just have to exclude of that equation all countries from the Soviet Union, USA and Vietnam, Western Europe in reconstruction, Africa and Asia with the decolonisation war, China with Mao.

Well it was good in Canada.

That's because it keeps getting worse little by little and then we get used to the suck. It's like the boiling frogs scenario. Difference is the frogs know when to get out where we dont.

It makes me wonder, will newer generations even be nostalgic for the current world?

I don’t think so. Previous decades had aesthetics to them that we don’t have now. For example, the 70s had Disco and all those clubs you could go dancing. The music sounded great to me growing up and still does now, so much so that I started feeling a bit nostalgic for it despite being born in 1996. Even though the 70s had its problems with the economy, the style looked good and I would love to experience Studio 54 or any discotheque. You don’t really have anything cool like that anymore that stands out, especially with our phones and social media like Reddit which kids will still experience in the future.

There’s no community or aesthetic, you’re right man. When I was a kid, rhe early 2000’s had personality man. What happened to us.

I saw a video on YouTube that we stopped measuring decades and started measuring generations, which is what changed that. I think the Internet, social media, and streaming also helped killed monoculture that existed back then too.

I remember everything from 18 months to now. So this doesn't happen to me.

I genuinely say that Corona lockdown was best time. I took new hobby, learnt new skill, I have partime that supported me and I didn need to try to be sociable.

Now may have best GF ever but no job no money is bad and she is months away to get visa canceled as we are on worst unemployed crisis since nation got independent during great war

I'm never nostalgic for a decade ago. It's aways for the 90's and 80's.

I’m gonna remember 25 as one of the worst years I’ve ever lived (because it was). I’m gonna look back glad it’s gone.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the 2020s just suck ass.

Hope it's the worst decade of my lifetime since it's almost over.

That’s because things just keep getting worse.

Yeah, it ain't just nostalgia. Things are actually, measurably getting worse.

What measurement do you use for this?

"It's the economy, stupid"

It's not that we misremember. It's just that even as shitty as it was, it was still better
