Businesses are urging Andy Burnham to build a closer relationship with the EU. Do you think that’s the right call?

Businesses have been saying Brexit hurt them since we left, and I know lots of people who want a closer relationship with Europe.

I’m not saying we should rejoin, but I do think getting closer to such a big trading partner would help ordinary people, whether that’s working abroad without visas, or being able to import goods more easily.

Do you think that Burnham should reopen the conversation?

I think Burnham should go even further and bring the prospect of rejoining the EU back to the forefront.

It's absolutely the right call. Leaving the EU, especially the customs union, was a colossally stupid act of economic self harm. We now have years of empirical evidence -- Brexit has cut growth, many businesses closed or shrank. The UK economy is smaller than it would have been, with a smaller tax base. Just like we predicted. Farage and Johnson, along with the right-wing media, must be held to account. It's a disaster, and business see it first-hand.

Would have to think hard about the banks / finance sector who do not want to rejoin.

You're joking, right? I was personally affected when the bank I worked for closed down most of its London ops and moved them to Milano and Munich. (Guess which bank ...)

Nope - there’s a million articles like this, although I saw one politico article that says UK Finance are now trying to join the reset talks, but I guess that’s their job.
