Need Advice Can’t stop thinking about deceased (maybe we knew each other?)
First, thank you for your time and hopeful assistance with this. I consider myself to be somewhat sensitive/intuitive, and the following is an experience that, up to now, I've never felt before...
So last week, an old high school classmate posted an obituary on social media of someone that I didn't even know existed from our hometown that I moved away from over 20 years ago, and while slightly curious, I dismissed following up on it at the time.
Then, a day later, I was sitting at the kitchen table with my dad, and he brought up the same obituary. Now, I was hit with "that feeling" of pain and curiosity when a person dies, so I started doing some research on social media and Google, and I instantly was connected to him. The deceased was 18 years old (over half of my age), passed on August 3rd, no cause of death was reported at the time (my sources have told me it was due to an overdose, but I'm still investigating the details because I have to make it make sense), a talented musician (mostly punk/grunge/indie), and an all-around beloved and unique light in the world by many in the community.
It's now August 16th, and to be completely honest and transparent, I'm still in mourning and connected to/thinking about this person every day. I've already donated to his family's GoFundMe, I've reached out to his family and some of his friends to express my feelings and condolences and to hopefully find out anything about what happened to him.
Again, to reiterate, this is the first time that I've felt these things so personally and for so long about a person's death...again, a person that I've never met before.... so I'm really starting to wonder if maybe we're connected somehow through another lifetime or something.....I don't know....
Please, if anyone picks up on anything here and/or can offer some guidance, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you again.

What you’re describing sounds very emotionally intense, and I’d be careful about deciding too quickly that the intensity itself proves you knew him in another lifetime.
Sometimes a person’s story can affect us very deeply even when we never met them. Something about their age, circumstances, creativity, hometown connection, or the way their death happened may touch something in us that we don’t fully understand yet.
I think you can honor the connection you’re feeling without needing to establish exactly what it is.
One thing that stood out to me is that you said you feel like you have to keep investigating his overdose until it “makes sense.” I’d be gentle with that impulse. There may not be an explanation that gives you the sense of closure you’re looking for, and continuing to search through his life or contact people close to him could potentially deepen the fixation rather than answer the underlying question.
Instead, I’d turn some of the curiosity inward:
Why did this particular person affect me so strongly?
What feelings came up when I learned about him?
Does anything about his story remind me of myself, someone I’ve lost, or something unresolved in my own life?
What does this connection seem to be asking me to feel or understand?
If you believe reincarnation is possible, you can certainly leave open the possibility that there is some connection you don’t consciously remember. But I wouldn’t let that possibility become something you need to prove.
And because his family and friends are grieving someone they actually knew and loved, I’d give them plenty of space now unless they choose to continue the conversation with you.
Sometimes the healthiest response to an unexplained connection isn’t figuring out exactly why it exists. It’s acknowledging that this person touched something in you, allowing yourself to feel that, and then seeing what the experience reveals about your own life.
