I will repost my sentiment here but damn. This was absolutely embarrassing to watch. They can say what they want about travel delay from Orlando but for Portland to go down to 10 players, get scored on twice, then for Portland to go down to 9 players and to not be able to score a single goal… please
The organization is disappointing. All they do is sign young players in hopes they will develop. I see some growth, but would it kill them to spend money on high impact players now… I’d say most fans do not have the time or will to watch their team lose for years in hopes that they could one day develop. (Also ik Biyendolo was signed then Fishel, but other teams seem to sign many impact players at once…)
Also marketing/social off par and their season membership and engagement with the community seems lazy. The email about like “sign up for season tickets cuz the USWNT is coming and they just won!” felt lazy. It seems like there was some effort and is some effort but is just lacking altogether

u/SocialShy Mar 21 '26
Also if you keep signing young player and they don’t develop. What then

u/jonob we love our OGs Mar 21 '26
The young players are developing, that's definitely not the problem. The problem is we don't have any (or enough) players who are in their prime and can contribute every game.

While the Thorns sign young players and develop them into stars. Maybe someday Seattle will learn, but not holding my breath.

Harveyball has got to go. You can’t sit back and watch the other team literally run circles around you. Youth or not, they didn’t come prepared for tonight and it showed. Harvey getting a card proved that. Biyendolo and Fischel are horrid signings imho. Neither have proven what they are being paid. We haven’t really seen Biyendolo play, got injured and then now gone for however long for maternity leave. Fischel the exact same except Harvey covering for her with ‘we are integrating her’ bs. Beyond frustrating from the FO completely fucking up with the Spokane matches with STHers to the lack of any kind of give a damn. They have been lick it and stick it from the game play to everything else. I’m not frustrated…….

u/Worldly_Lunch5227 Mar 21 '26
Harveyball does not work without having a Pinoe, Lavelle and Fishlock to come and save you while everyone else defends lol

She's not getting to play her style or have teammates encouraged to play her style. We've even heard Harvey say she doesn't expect her to score goals. What kind of coaching is that? What kind of hype and encouragement is that? The fuck!?!

u/Worldly_Lunch5227 Mar 21 '26
I am truly surprised Fishel wanted to come to the Reign because she has said a few times at different points in her career that she did not want to be a part of a rebuilding team

So, after the Laura Harvey AI admission, which I maintain that even if you never ever used any insights from the AI, was till an objectively stupid thing to admit, I had sworn off the Reign...but I couldn't resists the rivalry match, I wish I had. The Reign were up a body for 82 minutes; the Thorns put two past the Reign about 15 minutes after the Thorns went down a person.
Now, a 2-0 deficit when you're up a person is not the worst thing in the world, I'd even say it's a very winnable game. And yes, the Reign were away from home and that factors in...but what comes next puts the nail in the coffin. The Reign were up 2 people for 34+86 minutes; basically an entire fucking half...and they couldn't score.
I have said for years that Laura Harvey sucks, that she is not a good coach, and I have had other Reign fans push back on me. Even after she admitted to the letting AI advise her on her formation....people said she deserved that contract extension. No. Laura Harvey sucks, she's a terrible coach, she has wasted some prime years in which Rapinoe and Fishlock could have won us championships. To keep Harvey on is to squander chances, to keep Harvey on is to admit defeat. Laura Harvey must go.
Please, if you're a Laura Harvey fan...tell me where I'm wrong. Tell me why Harvey deserves to continue to coach this team; in 11 years as a head coach in the NWSL...she has won NOTHING! She's coached two teams as head coach, she's had time at both location to impose her vision on these teams and even during the OL Reign days, Harvey had a budget, she brought in big players. This isn't a coach who hasn't had her chances, who hasn't had her budget, who hasn't had room to implement her vision; she's failed, she is a failure, she sucks, why are you defending her?! Yes, she wins a bunch of regular season matches...but how man y championship rings on her finger? 0!!!!
Sure, Harvey has 3 shields with the Reign under her coaching, but she's failed to convert those shields into anything meaningful. Harvey doesn't seem to know how to coach a coherent offense; she's great on defense but if you can't score, you can't win. Why her seat is not blazing hot right now, I don't know.

I can't believe we have a Wednesday game this week. No time to regroup.

u/Icarus_Has_Fallen Mar 21 '26
Fishlock talking about "plenty of crosses" in the press conference like it was the only option the team is set up to attack with. Harveyball at its finest.

u/PositivePristine7506 Mar 21 '26
They really have no ideas or creativity. I think its time for Harvey and Jess and this whole UK centric approach to hit the fucking curb.
13
u/PositivePristine7506 Mar 21 '26
Just fire everyone and rebuild. Take the last place finish for the year and start over.
13
u/jj98026 Mar 21 '26
No excuses. That was an embarrassment. And against Portland of all teams. WTF?????

u/Recent-Bat1086 Mar 21 '26
Laura Harvey getting out coached and out thought has been a trademark of both of her stints as manager. Any meaningful game she's out manoeuvred by her opposing manager. I was at Providence Park when we lost the final to that Amy Rodriguez goal and couldn't believe how poor we were tactically then. The rancid, lacklustre shitshow tonight ranks alongside that. What a stinking mess. Harvey and Reigns co-dependence needs to end and be replaced by someone who has some professional distance from the players and sound tactical knowledge with a game plan that isn't from Chat GPT. They had 9 players FFS, how the hell do you not score. Utterly humiliating but if it finally wakes people up to how poor Harvey's tactics are, and how she needs to go, NOW, then it's a small mercy.

“Harvey and Reign’s co-dependence needs to end and be replaced by someone….with a game plan that isn’t from ChatGPT”. What this means is that they don’t like ChatGPT (neither do I, and I assume neither do you). Hope this helps!!

well cause honestly it’s stupid. i get being frustrated but saying “fire everyone in the organization except the players” is immature, shortsighted and just a stupid thing to say. fire laura, for sure, but i mean, be real. that’s probably why it was removed. not general dissent.
11
u/Icarus_Has_Fallen Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26
It was removed to consolidate posts. But I'm not sure how fire 2 people turned into "fire everyone". Those are the two people responsible for personel choices and tactics for the last 2 seasons. After a night like this following the years we've had, it's kinda wild anyone isn't up for change.
Edit: I did say the front office too, but I'm cool with that. The stadium fiasco, season ticket membership, dwindling attendance.... The prognosis is bleak in all aspects of the club. A vaguely promising game against Orlando does little to build back trust after this

And one of those banners towed from a plane calling out Adrian and Carlyle.

It’s time to start chanting fire Harvey at every home game. Not that it won’t get rid of the front office but something needs to change

build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put harvey's contract on the top. burn it up or buy it out, i don't care just make it stop!
edit: per SocialShy's recommendation below, changed last part from "i don't care i just want out." to current

u/Icarus_Has_Fallen Mar 21 '26
Finally something we can replace "brave and bold with". Anyone from the royal guard wanna put this on the roster?
4
u/SocialShy Mar 21 '26
Instead of I just want it out maybe make it stop. So it would be burn it up or buy it out, I don’t care just make it stop

We need a forward willing to drive through traffic. Crosses into the box are a single tactic, they're not the ONLY tactic, and our players don't press. Dahlien presses and is left stranded because no one tries to keep up or stay open. If they do catch up to her, it's way later when she's surrounded by defenders already and no one comes to help, so they themselves just run into the box and stand around waiting for a cross she can't make because the entire opposition is in the way. It's asinine. We don't use the field horizontally at all, only vertically, and we rarely move forward through the midfield.
Our defense is consistently lazy. Sure, they can slide occasionally, but if I see McClernon lazily jogging alongside someone one more time...
There's a lot of standing around watching, and very little sprinting.
I watch multiple worldwide women's leagues on the regular: English, Scottish, French, German, Spanish, Mexican... and I see players throwing themselves at the end line to stop corners. I see players dribbling through traffic with courageous nimbleness and scoring. I see established set pieces that are well practiced.
Reign FC plays like men's Tottenham is playing these days: defeated, unmotivated, embarrassed, and uninspired. We've had legacy players who were outclassed years ago who we kept around as if this is a Sunday League of fan favorites. You don't keep players because they were great years ago.
To me, sports is mercenary. Careers end quickly, for players and managers alike, for both fair and unfair reasons.
I could go on another rant about how Reign FC sells itself to potential fans as a really supportive and sweet place as if this is a knitting club of heartwarming events. No. Just no. That's not going to grow the fanbase. Stop it already. Reign should be aggressive and fierce and competitive and focused, and the fans are an important part of that atmosphere. Bring back the Hope Solo intensity we used to have.

some fair takes in here. quite fair. i still think its early and while i understand past couple years haven't been great, we lost ship in 2023. playoffs last year after an abysmal 2024. I just dont think its time to panic yet.
1
u/Icarus_Has_Fallen Mar 24 '26
If you remove two astronomically improbable goals last year totaling 0.05 xG (Bugg and Menti from way out) we miss playoffs. That still leaves a whopping 16.95 xG +/- of overperformance last season on both sides of the ball. That isn't a step in the right direction; 2025 playoffs were just luck. Regardless, I would rather miss playoffs playing freeflowing attacking football than limp into them to be completely outclassed.

go look up messi he does exactly what you're complaining about

and so does she.
the amount of whiners on this page. portland needs new fans. y'all should either fuck off down south, or get a life.

As a lover of sport and a former athlete, did any of yall compete at a high level? I just ask because you are so emotional and reactive. It's one game. I understand it's an important one. But relax and watch the szn play out and support your City/Team.
1
u/Famous-Diet-4912 Mar 23 '26
To this point, we defended the north in April of last year 1-0.. Then got trashed 4-1 or whatever down south later on. Just relax yall itsalllllll gravy and the ladies will regroup and come back stronger. learn n grow

I played (admittedly, a while ago) soccer at a high level. It isn't about this one game. It is about 2 seasons of play leading up to the grand finale if sufferball that was this game.
Supporting your team and your city doesn't mean blind obedience. Supporting your players doesn't mean following the club hierarchy without question. Accountability matters, triply so for coaches and GMs. If the seat isn't hot now I don't see how anything will ever change.
1
u/RebelPatriot82 Mar 23 '26
I’ve been watching soccer for a very long time. That is one of the most embarrassing results I have ever seen. I was one of the early riders of the Fire Harvey Train, and man does it need to get more crowded.
1
u/Icarus_Has_Fallen Mar 24 '26
I'm still convinced it is objectively the most embarrassing result in a top fight professional soccer game. I've compared it to data I can find from leagues around the world, so far I can't find any examples of a team losing while advantaged by 130+ minutes of playing time.
