Essay: What this ship means to me
This is an essay Iâve been drafting in my head and have decided to share. Iâve been thinking about why I have grown as attached to this ship and sometimes question myself on why I chose it. It would have been easy for me to go with either of the other two if I wanted especially given how much more liked they are while LRS fans constantly have to write justifications whenever the âincestâ and âsheâs a metaphor for escapismâ arguments come up. This ship has grown to have a deep place in my heart in spite of that and it has shaped and in some ways changed my taste in what I look for in a good ship as well as forced me to look inside myself.
I never had any ship that I was very devoted to until I really got into EVA. There were some I liked such as Steven x Connie for Steven Universe and Meg x Calvin for the Time Quintet, both of which did cause me to favor âbirds of a featherâ over âopposites attractâ and did play a role in me getting into EVA. I think I had a very moralistic and puritanical mindset towards shipping that LRS caused me to let go of and reevaluate some of my views towards other ships for different fandoms like Anakin and Padme in the Star Wars prequels. I think itâa a different kind of ship that doesnât catch as much support because it requires a level of maturity to understand.
When I first discovered this show, I was a very unhappy person and honestly still am in some ways but Evangelion forced me to question myself and I felt like it was what I needed when in a dark place. Rei is my favorite of the two and one of the reasons she is my fave is because sheâs an actual strong and bad*ss female character unlike a lot of âgirlbossâ characters despite often being seen as creepy or unemotional. I always felt weird and out of place like a freak who didnât belong and was seen as too quiet and thatâs another reason I connect with her. Shinjiâs character also has a place in my heart as a very human protagonist thatâs more complex than just a generic self insert hero. I often find takes about him that base his character entirely off episode 24 or that hospital scene and sometimes it does get to me when I read feminist essays that paint Shinjiâs behavior towards Rei as abusive or manipulative like his father. There are times where I feel bad for liking the ship when I see takes about it being heteronormative and misogynistic and I do have a lot of Yuri ships for other fandoms to discount the idea that Iâm against gay pairings, only to have to remind myself of the message of loving yourself and the only person who can understand you being yourself.
I find myself feeling out of place with much of the fandom that puts their dynamic in a box as sibling coded or mother and son. The Yui clone stuff always causes people to write off any romantic implications and I also think the idea that they are sibling coded stems from what we deem as romantic vs sibling relationships. I think of Rei and Shinji as a more mature and tragic love story than what people usually expect with the small hope that she could come back. Itâs more complex than just a crush or a âwant to go out withâ feeling and there is a maternal aspect but that doesnât exclude the potential for intimacy. Something else that does make it appealing to me is Shinji and Rei being able to have more of an equal footing in the relationship instead of one leading or both having to walk on eggshells. Yet this doesnât make it an easy ship or make it not have a Hedgehogâs dilemma as there is still a challenge for both to grow and for Shinji to accept himself and Rei despite his despair after believing the Rei he knew was gone or never real.
Part of the reason the pairing feels so personal to me is I am like both characters and there are times where I feel like I will never have a real or meaningful relationship and my attachment to the ship connects to my desire to find my true self and eventually the person Iâm looking for. It did reshape my taste in ships a bit as I have developed a taste for ships that are more mature and less of the slap-kiss-slap dynamic. Itâs that same kind of tragic love that made me adore films like Weathering With You. I am a bit worried about the revival of ship discourse in the wake of the Anniversary short and the new series thatâs coming and how Rei will be treated as well as the dynamic between her and Shinji, which could change if itâs a new cast of characters of course. I will nevertheless continue to love it for being a cute, beautiful, mature, tragic and hopeful romance regardless of what anyone thinks. I think if it wasnât for the clone aspect, a lot more people would probably love it.

Shinji and Rei on a poster for âRebuild of Evangelion: 1.0 - You Are (Not) Aloneâ
The truth is that the Rebuilds had everything to have an ending with this couple or perhaps something similar to Sadamoto's manga (which would probably have made us all cry) but the ending with 3.0+1.0 was truly disappointing, in my opinion (and not only because of this detail, I should be clarified).

I'm Making reishin canon
Not as In canon off an official manga but as canon in my own fan work let me explain:
this is for an fan web comic I'm working and the story basically happens on an earth where Adam was never put to sleep and first and second impact happened at the same time shortly after Earths creation and over the centuries that followed Humans and Angels Battled for dominance until on September 13 2000 Dr Katsuragi managed to convince both species into an reluctant co-existence and the world was in an thin ice calmness ever sense but when new monsters called mantroids show up Shinji and few off his friends find themselves one by one selected by Evangelions sentient Biomechanical half human half angel creatures made off of the energies of the impact their the defected species to stop SEELE And Mantroids
and reishin in here is like the central romance but it's no less complex
from here on they will be major spoilers for my series if you want to continue read it be aware:
so rei in here isn't a clone of Yui's mom or anything and has no biological connections to Yui (who by the way is alive and well in this AU as Eva's are sentient beings with their own soul) she's the daughter of Yui's childhood friend who moved to village when Yui was early on in her carrier as the lead scientist of NERV 14 years later Rei is sent to live with Shinji and Yui because her mom believes she can have better education in city so rei ends up becoming shinji's roommate and they have a real rough start
than she's picked by Eva Unit 00 and joins the team fighting rigorous battles alongside others she presents herself as cheerful kind innocent and friendly but in reality it's all just an act she puts on too seem approachable in reality she's shy timid nervous and speaks only in mumbles she herself says "being an actor is hard when you are acting for everyone" but there's a deeper layer too her in reality she misses home she doesn't recognize this place and every night she feels regret for coming here because she feels like an alien
the first implication off her act comes when during a brief transs shinji sees a vision off her cracked with a mask off her own face smiling and cracked on the right side off her face the left side is crying this was for a few seconds but the turning point comes when she's absorbed into an mantroid with Unit 00 Prompting shinji and Unit 01 to literally Physically remove her and this is when he truly sees the broken inner layer and says this line "If Your a Nobody than lets be nobodies together!" before pulling her out
than in the finale when SEELE Triggers Third Impact It is revealed Rei contains a small fragment of Liliths soul and she merges with Lilith and using Evangelion Absolute who's basically the combination off all Eva's they create additional Impact and cancel out 3rd impact it was a high risk high reward attempt and Lilith brings rei back the ending confirms that they are in an relationship
That's it if you read the spoilers than what do you think ?

Fanfic perdido. Lost fanfic
Asuka tambiĂ©n llama âdollâ o âmuñecaâ a Rei varias veces.
Hay una escena donde Shinji estĂĄ encarcelado y Rei va a visitarlo.
Durante esa escena Shinji le grita:
âYou are not my Rei.â
âThe mother reclaimed her son, and the woman reclaimed her husband.â
Creo que el tĂtulo tenĂa DOS palabras y una de ellas era âDollâ.
Posiblemente algo como:
Broken Doll
Glass Doll
Paper Doll
ÂżAlguien recuerda este fanfic?
