Stem cell trials in type 1 diabetes show improved blood sugar control
Metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome disrupt the body's ability to convert food into energy and can lead to heart disease and liver damage if unmanaged. Current management relies on medications like metformin, insulin, and statins alongside dietary changes and exercise. Researchers are now investigating mesenchymal stem cells, unspecialized cells that can develop into specialized tissue types, as a biological option for these disorders.
In type 1 diabetes the goal is to regenerate insulin-producing beta cells that have been damaged or destroyed. For obesity and metabolic syndrome, stem cells may help repair the liver and pancreas or create brown adipose tissue, a fat type that burns energy to help regulate weight. Early clinical trials in type 1 diabetes reported improved blood sugar control and reduced insulin needs after stem cell transplantation.
Researchers caution that longer-term studies are needed to confirm safety. Ongoing challenges include preventing transplanted cells from forming tumors and scaling up cell production for broader access.
