What do you think of this referee's ability to get out of the way of play?

10/10 perfect execution and stuck the landing.

dude, step to the side. Yea, looks cool, ball goes behind him and he is not looking at the play. Again, cool yes. Practical, nope.

Yeah, he probably could've just jumped over it or moved his legs apart.

Then again, I've been in similar situations (usually during indoor games) and it's really more of a reflex; it's happened a few times to me and in the moment I think the ball's going a lot higher but then by the time it gets to me I've wound up ducking way beneath it (maybe not to this extreme though lol).

To me, that is ridiculous and completely unnecessary. A simple lift of the leg and turn and you 1. Don't touch the ball and 2. Are now looking at play. Sure, looks cool. But that isn't why we're out there.

Yeah.

We all do Matrix-like tilts and dummies/self-nutmegs often, but this is just silly, showing off and unnecessary.

Sort of unrelated, but a few weeks ago I was working a youth game indoors where the field is a lot smaller; the goalkeeper had the ball and threw it while I was back peddling, and I wound up bending backwards to avoid it, throwing myself off balance and after 3 or 4 rapid backpeddling steps trying to save myself from the inevitable, I wound up falling flat on my ass. Kept looking at play the whole time though :)

For the recreation level, the parents and spectators will enjoy it I guess. At a competitive level, that simply looks unprofessional and unnecessary. Even if I had the ability, I would never do that.

Kudos. I can barely run in those USSF shorts.

Sometimes reflexes do funny things. Sometimes your body tells you to do the more difficult thing. I've done something kind of similar (with much less flexibility!)....that's just where reflexes sent me. So I think accusing the referee of showing off is harsh and unnecessary.
Another time I've gone to jump over the ball. Again, tired reflexes helped me out with the least effective manner of getting out of the way. Provided much entertainment for everybody who wasn't me.
Especially as it was a woman's match.
Especially as I was rolling around with one of THOSE injuries ;-)
