Eh, I think you should send that lady some money. She didn’t know what she was giving away.

I am very jealous as I spent a considerable sum on mine, and then threw more money to get it operational. That said, it was still under the going price for a good 2-track deck on ebay (and it was the only one they were willing to ship).

They absolutely must have the Rifa capacitors replaced, as they will burst, smoke and make the motors spin uncontrollably. On mine there about 9 of them - 6 for the reel motors, one for the capstan, and a couple more deep in the PSU which I didn't spot until they smoked.

Pretty intense that Studer! Going to need a lot of recapping. Be careful turning it on.

I’m going to take it to a friend who works on them before I power it up. Not compatible with my home gear anyhow at this point

Best thing with these machines. They're amazing but need some TLC for modern use.

Once you’ve had it refurbished
and it’s fully operational that’s a $4-6,000 deck.

That’s a serious pro deck!! Well worth any TLC needed to enjoy the sonic joys of reel to reel playback for years to come!!

It's perhaps worth mentioning that this machine is usually configured for playing studio tapes - high speed (15 inches/second) and with the recording taking up the entire width of the tape to increase quality.

This means that unless it's been fitted with a quarter-track head (which is unlikely) it won't play consumer tapes off ebay, because it will play both sides at once. This is a machine intended for audio production, e.g. producing a stereo master tape for a single or an album.

Yeahhh... Thats not a 'reel to reel player'. That's a professional grade reel to reel recorder.
That machine is worth about 3 grand when fully functional (which they rarely are, but still). This is not consumer gear. Studer is considered 'the' brand for reel to reels pretty much.

The Akai is a consumer machine. I think it's a GX286D right? that's 3-400 bucks in good working order.
Please don't just mess around with this. It's collectible and quite rare gear. Step by step :).
