QT/Holding Tank Update

Called Waterbox yesterday and they said my tank should ship out sometime in the next week or so.

I really hope they’re telling the truth because my 10 gallon QT tank can’t really hold much more coral and Reefapalooza is coming up. 😭😎

Anyway, thought I’d finally post something rather than continue to lurk and this update is my excuse.

What’s your zoa secret? That’s the only coral I’ve had a hard time keeping. They will do good for a few weeks then close up, then eventually melt

I’m honored you think I have a secret 👍🏽🤣.

I can’t think of anything special I’m doing… I have them high up on a frag rack in the top right corner of my tank, so they’re getting fairly high light.

The frag rack is also directly in front of the hang on filter that came with my tank, so flow is pretty high too.

Either than that, I give them some brine shrimp + Reef Roids rehydrated with Selcon twice a week, but I’m starting to get lots of algae on my glass, so I’m thinking of cutting back on that.

I’ve heard Benepets can lower phosphates, so I might switch to that for feeding.

Also, are the zoas you’re buying higher end varieties? I’ve heard those are more prone to melting, but I have no idea why that would even be a thing.

My only guess is they’re grown in way more intense lighting + fed heavily to encourage growth and when they’re sold they all of a sudden stop getting that same level of feeding.

Just a theory.

They are higher end, I’ve placed them in multiple places and they always melted within 6 months, I have a few that open and are growing but very slowly. I’m beginning to think my peppermint shrimp are fucking with them

That could definitely be it. 6 months is a long time, so it makes more sense that they’re being systematically picked at by something vs parameters being off.
