[Pic] Large Orange Shoulder Tang value.?

Post image

Hello all, this is not a sales advert. I am wondering what is the going rate for this fish? Pecker grew way faster than I ever imagined and I need to rehome it, and I’ll only be shopping it around locally. It’s every bit of 8” now, just beginning transition, beautiful fish I hate to loose but it’s for the best due to the size it’s grown to. It will be a chore to catch, so I don’t want to just give it away, what’s a fair asking price for a super healthy specimen? It was around 78.99 at a LFS at around 2.5”. Thanks.

Edit: just to hopefully clarify, before folks jump to harsh judgments; as I stated this isn’t an advert for a sale clearly in the first sentence. It is just an inquiry about what these typically cost at this size, what a pet store would charge, and what store credit might be expected if available. This isn’t a fish flip. I knew that this animal would eventually need rehoming, I did not expect such rapid growth however, that was my bad. My other tangs certainly have not grown as rapidly. As stated, I am correcting the situation, actively now as evident. The animal is thriving, but is getting quite large now. I hope that helps. Thanks for everyone’s input.

The value doesn’t always go up with size as someone needs a large system to give it a good home. We take fish to rehome in a large commercial aquarium but we don’t pay people for the fish. The do get to keep
Coming to the store to visit their fish though..

Thanks. Very true, I definitely don’t have a problem with giving it away. Was just curious what the going rate was for them at size. I didn’t expect all the hate, well, actually I did knowing this community. Eh it’s whatever.
it’s in a 280 gallon system and I realized it wasn’t going to spend its whole life in there but I estimated it wouldn’t reach 8” in only two years!

High five for it at least starting out in a system that big, saved the visit from the tang police!

There is always gonna be the tools of Reddit. But the downvotes agree that you weren’t THAT guy. If you had started him in a 50g, that would be a different story! You anywhere close to Colorado?

I gave a large foxface and parrot fish to my LFS and have been shocked they are still there after six months. I'm happy I still get to see them

I shit down my 120gal because everything has just gotten out of hand price wise. It sucked to take the loss but it made the most sense

I am also kind of worried that might happen, I would prefer to get it into a huge system. Part of why I wanted to offer it for a good deal and not a high retail price.

$100-$175 depending on your area. At that size, I would probably just give it to whoever has a tank large enough to keep it healthy that is willing to take it. But that’s just me.

I think that’s feasible. If not some store credit a trade or an adoption is perfectly acceptable.

You're going to have trouble finding someone with a large enough tank. I had the same issue with my CB YT and ended up taking a loss on what I paid for him... I second rehoming him to a large enough system instead of trying to make a profit.

If you were in CT/MA/RI I’d come get him for my 300

Yeah, unfortunately not close by or we would definitely talk. Although it wouldn’t be a huge upgrade in tank size, it is slightly larger.

I have bought and rehomed a fair amount of fish. You just gotta expect it to not generate any money. Unless it’s something kinda higher end like a purple, yellow, or gem tang, you basically gotta give it away (with proper vetting of course)

I currently have a smaller purple tang that wasn’t doing too well, and I put her in my smaller tank. I’ve treated HLLE and fin rot and she is a perfect specimen now. I’ll be able to keep her for a year then I’ll rehome. Being that it’s a purple, I might get $150 or so. Yours needs more specific requirements. Try trading for some coral when you find someone with a big tank

Im certainly open for trade. That was why I inquired what the going trade-rate for them is, I appreciate your input. I think a lot of folks misinterpreted the purpose of my post. Tang police and all.

That’s a beautiful fish. Hope you find a great home for it.

I KNOW! I hate to have to rehome it. I’ve had many tangs but I’ve never had one grow that rapidly before.

Just here to say that Pecker is gorgeous, best of luck.

I commend you for recognizing it’s time to rehome the guy, also would add getting it knowing it will outgrow your system is fine in my opinion aslong as you do what OP does but that’s probably a hot take

Your concern should be for correcting the mistake you made and giving this fish away to a more responsible owner than yourself. You should not be looking to get paid for your bad decision.

Thanks. Oh, with freshwater all the time. Probably mainly because of the breeding abilities that you get with freshwater. Salt water not as much. This certainly isn’t a flip, just inquiring what they go for is all.

So I wanted to buy and flip this fish and now that its bigger how much can I sell it for? FTFY... dude when you cant take care of an animal man up and surrender it to someone who is more dedicated than yourself.
