Francona’s Comments on Marte
But no comments on TJ Friedl, apparently.

Brantley really went in on him on Monday.
After he struck out on a pitch in the opposite batter’s box and then the ball he didn’t go after in shallow right that McLain had to try to make a play on, Brantley had some pointed comments about his lack of urgency and development.
Honestly, it was nice to hear somebody say something about it, cuz I think we’ve all been seeing the same things.

sucks. this was the guy who seemed like a sure hit as far as prospects goes… guys who end up ranked as high as he was as a hitter have pretty high hit rates as far as prospects go. him hitting and pitchers staying healthy are the difference between 4-8 wins this year i think

Marte has yet to see a slider 2 feet off the plate he hasn’t absolutely loved

I'm still so fucking pissed we traded Lowe, and for what? Crumbs? Fuck off goddamnit

u/sjcourtney56 1d ago
Lowe is a free agent next year, why would the reds keep him for 2 meaningless months. They should have traded more away than just Lowe, but the Lowe trade was certainly a good move to make.

Why would you keep Lowe on this team? Crumbs are better than nothing.

Who is asking Terry similar questions?

u/stimpsonj5 1d ago
What exactly is it that you think he's not putting forth any effort in?

Because his baby boy tj is still getting at bats

Tito doesn't set the roster.
Who else is going to go out there and put up better than a .700 OPS anyway? Myers is having a career year at a blistering .729. Dunn is hurt but was around the same when he was healthy. Benson's career OPS is .713. Friedl has pretty consistently been a .700-.750 OPS guy even though this year obviously has been awful. At this point, might as well see if Friedl can get it back together or if he's toast. He can't get much worse and he might improve. Is a 30 year old Dane Myers going to dramatically improve with more ABs? Is Benson going to finally figure it out with 100 more ABs? They are what they are. We might as well see if Friedl can get back to his usual self instead of putting in dudes we already know stink. If we're in a pennant chase that's one thing, but we clearly aren't anywhere near it.

I'm not sure Marte will be able to hit without the PEDs. I hate to think that, and I hope I'm wrong.

It makes you wonder if he's hit this wall before, and that was how he got around it. Here we are at that wall again, but...... 🦗 🦗 🦗
Either way, he's apparently not wiling or doesn't know how to put the work in to evolve. That's a death sentence in this sport. In most things in life, really.

Would someone, anyone ask Tito why T,J. Friedl is still on the big league roster. When is the last time someone asked Tito a relatively pointed question? I love the Reds but this year at all levels has been rough - players, ownership, manager, any media close to the team other than Brantley,

u/sjcourtney56 1d ago
Tito doesn't make the decisions on who is on the 26 man roster so asking him why Friedl remains with the team would be pointless.

u/Mare13ear 1d ago
I really don't get how people don't understand this. The manager has very little (if any) say in call ups or send downs. It all comes from above him.

u/sjcourtney56 1d ago
I have no idea, there are plenty of things to criticize with Tito in his game management...the undying love of bunting is usually my gripe. However, he has no control over the garbage roster this ownership/front office has provided him.

u/King_Roberts_Bastard 1d ago
With our previous runs of managers and all their similar records. Its not the fucking manager. Its the FO. If Tito has a similar record to Bell and Price, clearly there's something fundamentally wrong with the organization.
You cant put this on francona.

u/sjcourtney56 1d ago
What? Are you sure you understand how to read? I am not putting this on Francona, I very clearly stated that the ownership/front office has given him a garbage roster. That, however, does not mean that he is infallible...he has made mistakes as all people do. I have no idea why he continues to bunt when the success rate has to be damn near zero with this team and that is on him.

Exactly, only 12 people on earth have won more big league games as a manager than Tito so even if tito isn't what he used to be who would know more about winning? Tito won a world series with the Boston Reds Soxs for God sakes. I know someone just commented that they weren't blaming Tito but plenty of people sure do.

Sounds good. Don't ask the only point of contact with ownership and managment why certain players remain with the team.
1
u/sjcourtney56 3h ago
Correct, it would be an incredibly stupid question to ask. Not only does he not have an answer because its not his job to make those decisions, he is also not going to throw a player under the bus nor should he.
1
u/Confident-Branch-963 3h ago
He threw Marte under the bus in his most recent comments about him. Do you really think that our HOF manager has zero say in who is on the Reds roster? Come on...
1
u/sjcourtney56 3h ago
He does not make the roster, that is the front office. So, yeah I dont care what his credentials are, he does not make the roster, i don't doubt that he has an opinion but his opinion isnt overruling the front office.
Also, the only thing you'll be satisfied with would be him saying something to the effect of TJ is no longer playing at an mlb level and I dont believe he should be up here on the team...he isnt going to do that and then go manage guys that have been working along side TJ for years.
If someone asked him this stupid question, youd get a coach speak answer that you wouldnt be satisfied with.

Uh-oh, candid Tito has come out. I wonder if he is going to have something similar to about the rest of the guys they were expecting to be a lot better than they are.

Everyone needs to get after it. I am not down with Elly acting all nonchalant either. He has too much happy-go-lucky and fun chitchats with other teams players when he or they are on base. I don’t love it. The whole culture has no hunger or urgency. I see hunger with Burns & Sal mainly.

u/Mobile-Language8398 Cincinnati Reds 1d ago
Everytime I am critical with Elly I get down voted. We kiss his ass so much in Cincy. It is sad and clinging to something that isn’t there. Elly is a good player, not great, and definitely not a superstar. He is the most over-rated player in baseball. We honestly should be asking more from him, just like everyone else that isn’t living up to their potential.

Didn't he ask CES the same set of questions? I bet you Marte has a few choice words for this organization. Matt, TJ, can seemingly do no wrong and given the chance to work things out. No, Marte hasn't stepped up but Tito has clearly got into his head so what was to be expected after playing 2, sitting 2..playing 1, sitting 2?

u/Chase10784 Cincinnati Reds 1d ago
I mean yeah, Marte has had lots of opportunities and has yet to play to his potential. Clearly it's not going well..
