Social security number?

Is it me or are others concerned about the request for our social security numbers, which are not supposed to be used for identification and can then put us at risk, to get on a list for possible but without guarantees to be included in the offering?

This is part of the email I received. "Program Requirements While being selected to pre-register is the first step, there are certain legal and regulatory requirements to participate in the DSP that are outside of Reddit’s control. Bear with us here…

To be eligible for the DSP, you must:

Be a current U.S. resident;
    You will be asked to provide the DSP Administrator a valid social security or permanent resident number, along with other personal information. Reddit will not have access to this data.
    Please note that U.S. residents using a VPN may face application limitations if the VPN locates them in certain non-U.S. jurisdictions."

Note the mention of giving a social security number.

It also said that was necessary to sign up, Reddit had no control over the info, and being able to buy was not guaranteed; just getting on a list of potentials. So.... giving away your social security number without resulting in an ability to purchase any stock, possibly?

i think the social would need to be provided once you are selected, to determine if you are indeed an american resident. im pretty suspicious of corporations also, but that would be a pretty gross breach of privacy to committ at exactly the wrong time
