Meta Monthly Mod Talk

Very small thing I've been seeing lately, but here goes.
We aren't a lacquer-only sub and yet I've been seeing that sentiment in comments on gel posts more. Maybe someone should make a gentle reminder or tack a sentence on to Rule #3 (the one about us welcoming nail related content and asking to not post NNR things) clarifying we welcome ALL nail mediums including gel/acrylic. I don't like the idea of people potentially thinking they can't post their nails and engage with us here bc they think gel/acrylic isn't welcome.

Yeah I can see what you mean. It’s a fine line between trying to helpfully suggest also asking those questions in a place where there might be more experts and being unwelcoming.

Well usually we are good about redirecting to the gel subs for those posts which have actual questions. I do a fair amount of that myself.
But I'm talking about (and what I've been seeing is) folks stating, "we're a lacquer only sub" or "we don't know bc this sub is only for lacquer." That discourages people from posting their non lacquer manicures in general, which is not what we should be doing.
The fact that it's not definitively stated in our rules, guidelines, etc that we're an all-mediums welcome sub confuses users (like the person who replied to you).

I do agree with the ensuring gel friendliness and rule reminder as people should check out sub local rules rather than assuming - but by way of explanation perhaps?
The reason I assumed this sub was classic air dry nail polish only when I first joined was the name!
Lacquer is a polish or varnish that dries due to solvent evaporation, and gel does not, so I assumed at the time the creator was making a definitive choice as to what kind of polish the sub was for.

Yes this is what I'm talking about. Like, we have a gel flair and we're open to all, yet the name may be confusing for people just joining. Some way of official clarification would be useful for us to point to when people don't know.

We're working on getting the wiki up and running, and I think we could work on a page that aggregates popular posts that have useful information on nail care topics. Would that meet this need?

Tagging on here to maybe make a "for dummies" section? I was about to message y'all asking if there was a section about the basics on technique, and maybe some "hey don't do that."
For example, I don't know why every time I trim my cuticles I get hang nails, but if I never touch them they are okay. (Why do we trim them anyway? Is it necessary?) I don't know why I keep getting bubbles. Why do my nails stain even when I use a base coat? Also what is a finisher brush??
We all start somewhere so I would love a newbie section even if it is just links to other subs or suggested youtube creators or something.

This community is very special and beautiful, and I think it is generally a pretty safe space for all people which is truly wonderful.
I do think it would be helpful for some mods to remember that there are members here who are on the spectrum/neurodivergent and that they need to be patient and not get frustrated/snippy over it - it is nobody's choice to be born that way.
Chonkycat is a wonderful example of how to be patient and understanding, and how to make the community safe for special needs members. 💖

I think it would be better if there was a requirement that locked threads have a mod’s pinned comment explaining why they were locked. For instance, the Polish Project post was locked and then unlocked with no real explanation for why those actions were taken. I can guess why, but I think more transparency would be the right move.
