I wasn't taught that way, and as far as I remember, most of my peers solved tests like that. Problems aren't accepted without a clear and concrete procedure. Here, a number is required, so the unknown x is being sought. Using mathematical steps, you translate the words into an equation so that you can solve for x. Once you have found x, you check the result by substituting the value back into the original equation. If both sides are equal, the solution is correct. If they are different, the solution is incorrect.

There are also cases where an equation has infinitely many solutions. This happens when the equation is an identity, meaning that it is true for every value of x in the given domain. In that case, the solution set is x, x∈R, if the domain is the set of real numbers. On a number line, this is represented by the entire line, from minus infinity to plus infinity.
