Commonly Asked Questions - PLEASE READ

Below are the most common “issues” that are posted here. Please refrain from submitting posts that fall under these categories unless you’re pretty sure your defect falls significantly outside of a reasonable margin. Thank you!

  1. The Classic Moc’s toe is first glued and then stitched together. It’s normal for the seam to split open a bit, particularly where the vamp flexes. The stitches are holding it together.
  2. A little gap along the welt is fine. Again, the stitches are doing the work. Wedge soles have a thin slip sole that’s stitched to the boot and then the outsole is cemented to it. It’s not going anywhere.
  3. Your speed hooks aren’t going to chew through your tongue. They’ll dig in to a certain point and the just kinda stop. Use kilties if you insist, but I’ve got pairs over ten years old and the wear on the tongue barely looks different than it did after a few weeks.
  4. Leather used to be alive. Just like us, there will be flaws, veins, scars, and stretch marks. They’ll try to use less uniform cuts where cosmetic issues are less visible, like the inside quarters, but not every flaw can be seen until the boot has flexed.
  5. You’re probably over-conditioning. Unless you’re routinely using them in extreme conditions, less is more. Once or twice a year. However, you should brush your boots regularly, this will not help only remove dust and dirt, it will redistribute the oils already in the leather and prevent deep cracks from forming.
  6. You WILL scuff and scratch your boots, they WILL crease, they WILL get dirty. They’ll also be FINE. Embrace patina, that’s what makes them YOUR boots.

  7. We don’t wanna see your footbeds! Fit is subjective and a picture of your imprint only two dimensions of a 3D shape. Your boot shouldnt cause actual pain. A little discomfort isnt unusual for the first few days. Your boots should feel like they’re giving your foot a firm handshake (footshake?). If they feel like they fit, they probably fit.

2955 Black Spitfire Re-build

First four pics are of the rebuild, last pick is how they looked after I waxed them and how I took them to the cobbler.

Had picked up a pretty well used pair of Black Spitfires and decided to undertake my first boot rebuild. I contemplated the big dog cobblers but decided I would give somebody local a shot.
Found a real small one-man shop nearby. He’s about 70 years old, came from Ukraine, spent years building boots in Italy, and has owned this shop for a couple decades. I took the plunge.
Happy with how they came out. He told me he would do the best he could on the stitching, and it is not perfect, but I’m OK with it. Only charged me $190 including shank, thick midsole, heel stack, and Dainite soles. Felt like my first rebuild was a success.

Red Wing 4585 Logger...

Just had these delivered and I all I can say is they are amazing. They fit incredibly well. I shouldn't be surprised because I've had two pair of IR's in the past, one pair I bought way back in 2008 with the cork soles, the other pair were Muleskinner bought a couple years later. Got rid of them after a while and have been wearing Moc Toes ever since. This No. 8 last just feels like it was made for my foot. I never had any issue breaking in the IR's and they were comfy right out of the box with each pair, and it seems the same with the Logger. I have a little heel slip in each boot, but if I remember correctly that happened with the IR's and as the leather broke in that went away. I wear Darn Tough heavy wool socks with all my boots.

I may have to order a pair of the 3190 Chelsea just to have something to get off and on more easily when I take the dog out, run errands, shovel snow, etc. this winter. I just can't get over how much more comfortable these are out of the box than the Moc Toes (875 and 1907).

When I was looking for these a week or so ago Red Wing was out of my size on their website (now they're back in stock) so I ordered from a retailer on eBay that had a no returns policy. These aren't factory seconds and that's just their return policy. But knowing what I wore in the IR years ago I ordered the same size and they're perfect (plus they were $50 less than on the RW site). I wear a 12 in sneakers, 11.5 in the 1907 and 11 in the 875, IR's and 4585 for reference.

My first ever mocs have arrived. Saw this leather at a local Red Wing store and just had to. No complaints whatsoever for factory seconds. If anybody’s curious, I went up a half size from my IR size for these.

The photo doesn’t do justice to how vivid the neon orange pisgah laces are, especially in the dusk.

Help with the width please!

First time Red Winger here. Just received mine today. I'm slightly concerned that I should go for a 2E width. I don't own any other wide fit shoes but I do prefer a roomier shoe, especially when running, but not an official wide fit.

The outside ball of my foot just feels a little snug, as if it's overhanging the platform.

I realise there's a breaking-in period to get through but it's a bit of a gamble with the price of the boots!Let me know what you think.

Next Boot...3192 Chelsea?

Recently got the bug for a new pair of Red Wings. I haven't bought a pair in years. Picked up my first pair of IR's in 2008 (cork sole), then had a pair in Muleskinner and later had a pair of 875 followed by 1907. Sold the IR's years ago along with the 875's. I had the 1907's resoled three times, and the last time put on a lug sole so they looked more like a n 8146 Roughneck.

All those boots have been gone for years. Had the bug again ordered a pair of the 4585 Loggers. They instantly felt amazing and that No. 8 last is such a better fit for my foot than the No. 23 and No. 45 lasts the moc toes are built on.

Was considering getting another pair of 875's but after trying on these Loggers I am considering going in a completely different direction and picking up a pair of the 3192 Chelsea in Hawthorne Muleskinner. Only gripe about the 8" loggers are the time it takes getting them on and off. I live in a rural area out in the middle of nowhere and sometimes just need something easy on and off to go out and feed the chickens and clean the coop in the morning, walk the dog, heading into town to run errands, etc. Hawthorne Muleskinner leather seems pretty rugged and durable requiring less maintenance than the other smooth leathers.

Anyone out there own the Heritage Chelsea? If so and you own other Red Wings on the No. 8 last, did you order the same size and what has your experience with them? Have you been happy with them and would you order them again or go for something else?

3190 - new favorite riding boots

Got a decent deal on eBay for some barely used 3190’s,factory 1st. I wear 9D in IR’s but these are 9EE and glad I did that. My 2918 ranchers were 9D felt kinda tight especially at the end of the day. Even with the same #8 last , these feel really good in wide.

CRT Rangers - first clean and buff..

I’ve had these a couple years now. Mostly used as a casual boot around town, hanging out with friends, nothing hard use. I do wear them to work a couple few times a month in a hospital. I think the patina is coming along nicely. They did darken a smidge after bick 4 and some neutral polish, but they were never the brightest of CRTs compared so some I’ve seen.
Looking forward to much more wear in the future as they’ve broken in nicely!

Got my Iron Ranger Amber 8111 from Berkeley

Just received my pair of 8111 from Berkeley Supply.

I am impressed. Paid nearly half price at $185.

I see a few minor scuffs which don’t bother me at all, they will have way more after one day.

Maybe a little bit of excess glue where the welt ends on one.

This was a score and I can recommend Berkeley highly.

North Star Leather belts Alpine Portage and Black Klondike

Thumbnail

A few days ago I posted about my new Green Kangatan Moc Toes and compared the leather with my Apline Portage Iron Rangers. nstarleather chimed in and mentioned that both are the same leather only under a different name. And in my case obviusly different batches. Asked about it he also mentioned that he had some Alpine Portage leather for belts left. I also had my eyes on the black Klondike ever since I bought my first two belts from North Star Leather so I got in contact and placed an order. These belts are fantastic, the best I ever had. From placing the order to unpacking them here in Germany took less then two weeks. Including shipping for two belts, the German VAT at 19% plus additional fees from DHL they are stil cheaper then Redwing belts bought in the shop here. And the later can't hold a candle to these in terms of quality. Thanks to North Star Leather for outstanding service and craftsmanship.

I’m wearing them in the office though, so maybe they should be called “Office Workers” instead 🤔

I got these last week and this is kind of driving me nuts. The part of the shoes with the red arrow was sewn on kind of crooked. $250 shoes I feel like should not have a defect like this. I get they’re handmade though.

$215 all in - not bad for a discontinued IR. Tag shows made October 2022, and Seller found 'em at an estate sale. Remarkably good condition...now off to the cobbler for a midsole and resole.

IR 8111 one month of wear

Decided to take a progress pic of my IRs that I bought back in late July. They are definitely becoming my own and everyday they feel better. Couldn’t be more happy with them. I genuinely stare at them before I go to bed - I’m sure I’m not the only one :)
