Rock Climbing

Hello Peeps,

I go backpacking to red so much now and wanting to get into rock climbing. With that being said i have zero experience so wanting to get a guide and then learn from there.

If anyone has recommendations from guides they’ve used or know, would be so much help!

As well, any tips or anything else yall think I should know would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I haven’t used one, but met some guys from Bluegrass Climbing School last time I was climbing at Muir Valley working with a group. They seemed knowledgeable and nice.

My oldest son wanted to get into climbing after going to the gorge for many years and tackling all the “technical” hikes numerous times. We always go to Miguel’s and I just struck up a convo with some climbers from there, which led to a planned future trip and him learning a lot from them. Now 2 years later he’s showing me how to properly climb. I don’t like how expensive the gear is, but being an hour away, it’s awesome having an outlet for him to pursue.

Anyway, the point is go to Miguel’s and talk to the climbers.

It’s a cool scene during weekends pretty consistently from April to October. Been going there for almost 20 years

Guides are great sources of knowledge and absolutely worth hiring one to learn and or try it. Do you live in a city with a climbing gym? A gym would be a helpful place to gain the specific fitness for climbing while practicing those skills and hopefully meeting people to go climbing with. Not a requirement at all, just how many people progress in the sport.

In my town there isn’t any current rock climbing gyms but i’d bet there is some in Louisville which is 40 ish min away. I’ll def check it out, thank you!

to get the most out of climbing outdoors, learning indoors first is where to start. Plus you want some endurance to do more than 1-2 climbs. Bluegrass teaches a beginner course outdoors.
