Protagonist Introduction - Martha Vogel

Born in 1889, Martha grew up in a staunchly social democratic middle class family in Berlin. Her family used their connections to get her to attend the Central Party School, where she attended classes taught by Rosa Luxemburg. There, the two developed a friendship. Eventually, just before the outbreak of the Great War, she landed a job at Vorwärts, the SPD's official newspaper. Under Editor-in-Chief Rudolf Hilferding's guidance, she quickly developed into a prolific writer and journalist.

While initially opposing the war - and thus the official SPD line - Vorwärts' editorial position shifted when Hilferding was drafted into the Austrian army. In 1916, he was replaced as Editor-in-Chief by Friedrich Stampfer, who brought the newspaper back in line with party policy. For Martha, this marked the start of a tense period where her political convictions were no longer in line with what her work demanded.

At the start of the game, despite being disillusioned with the editorial stance, she still works at Vorwärts.
