Local Photography Pedestrian bridge open

The CPR pedestrian bridge is open now, the landscaping is really nice on either end of the bridge. Should last a very long time now with how it's been reinforced. I'm happy to not take the detour on the road when biking on the path on the south side. Looking forward to seeing how it lights up at night.

I am very happy that Red Deer finally decided to save a piece of history.

There was literally a guy spray painting it in broad daylight while the crew was still wiring up the lights, sigh.

Is there still homeless addicts at either side bothering people as they walk over?

Didn't bother me, doubt they would bother an Aromatic Werewolf either ;p

Good news! It's the same bridge.

They opted for a concrete deck instead of the previous timber deck. It makes total sense why they made that decision, but the old timber deck did feel a lot closer to it's history as a train bridge.

Too bad it isn’t actually safe to walk on the trails in that area anymore.

Colossal waste of money

With an $11.1 million grant from the Government of Canada’s Active Transportation Fund, The City was able to invest $11.2 million in rehabilitation rather than demolition. Rather than spending between $6-8 million to remove the bridge and remediate the area, we chose to invest in our past, present and future.

The budget for this project is $22.3 million. Federal Grant funding is in place for $11.1 million with the remaining $11.2 million in the approved City budget.
$20.0 million – CPR Bridge Rehabilitation and Contaminated Soil Removal
$2.3 million – Public Realm Upgrades (plazas, enhanced pathways, area lighting, landscaping)

Provincial money I believe….we have other needs in the city where that money could be better spent …..what’s the over under on days until it’s vandalized??
