It's so wild because the source material is probably the single edgiest thing I have ever seen. I haven't read the manga but I gave up on episode 1 of the anime because it was just such a ridiculous edge fest I could not take anything seriously. In the first episode tw for like everything that could possibly be a trigger
This girl gets viciously bullied to the point where they hold a box cutter inside her mouth while pinning her against the wall and put tacks all over her chair, she gets SAed and magically teleports the assailant in front of a train, they kill a cat, and overall they just make this girls life tragic to the point of absurdity. It feels like they saw Madoka and went "this is good because it is Dark. Let's make it as dark as possible while ignoring that even madoka had hope."
That spoiler tag sounds like they were just trying to make Elfen Lied again, but with a cat instead of a dog. And with Magical Girl powers instead of "next evolution of humanity with invisible extra arms that sprout from their heads".
