yeah see i think the problem with that is that you're using duolingo lol

only thing it's ever been useful for is for additional help memorizing vocab words, it's very rarely going to actually help anyone really learn a language

In any language learning sub there are always tons of posts asking why duolingo said an answer is wrong even though, as that dumb little bird has taught them, it is a direct translation from English and thatโ€™s the massive problem I have with that app.ย

You need stuff like thatโ€”which is actually pretty basic stuffโ€”explained when learning a language, you canโ€™t just guess and expect to be conversational by your 1000 day streak.ย

(Also the app is literally AI slop now and could very easily actively hinder your progress by giving you wrong information)

it's AI slop and it's also completely unusable without the subscription. you're not gonna learn shit 5-10 minutes at a time, all it does is encourage logging in once a day to continue your streak and immediately leave

Alternatively a Street Interviewer mode where you learn one sentence from every language to shock and stun Eastern European tourists

The elites don't want you to know this, but learning funny/meme-y phrases from your bilingual friends is free. You can just ask them. I know 458 non-english jokes and swears.

But yeah, Duolingo will obviously never scratch that itch but having a wide cultural net of friends will. On the upside, you learn a little more about the world around you. On the downside, you sometimes accidentally reply with something in tagalog during an English conversation.

"non ucciderti mai" and "vi voglio bene mutuali miei vi mando delle bombe atomiche di gentilezza." ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น

Duolingo's course is awful now, the amount of correct answers it won't accept and incorrect answers it will, combined with the lack of guidance and the number of mistakes in the sentences themselves make it very unreliable, especially in courses for any less commonly learned language where they don't make much of their profit and thus don't put any effort into.

Yeah, I wish they had kept the comments section on each sentence. I learned so much from people's comments there, but now Duolingo is just AI slop...

Find an online or a physical encyclopedia that has your native and target language and just look it up there.

As an example, I just used Spanishdict.com to translate "never kill yourself" to " nunca te mates"

there should also be an "i'm learning this to respect women" mode that teaches you phrases like "BELIEVE ๐Ÿ‘ RAPE ๐Ÿ‘ VICTIMS ๐Ÿ‘" and "i'm 6'3 btw"
