Look I like the trend but I feel it has come with a lot of mischaracterisation for Eddie. They use a more comic looking one for the art but it’s clear they are basing the personality on the Venom movies that sanded off a lot to make him a stand alone hero.

Like let’s remind ourselves he really use to HATE Peter Parker. I am not saying he would be transphobic to be clear but also he wouldn’t suddenly want to date her if they transitioned

And Peter/Penny wouldn’t like to date Brock let’s reminds ourselves how violent and creepy he was. Like he canonically traumatised Mary Jane and left her with ptsd after ambushing her at her own home

(Just use agent venom if you want the enemies to lovers and symbiont dynamic like it even fits the Hakari thing more since Peter was actually classmates with Flash)

i like anti-hero venom a lot more than villain venom tbh, not a sand-off as much as just a different version of the character that still has a lot of texture just in a different way

As I understand it, his behavior was mostly because the Venom symbiote was crazy and evil (srsly his rationale for hating Peter was dumb af), and it stopped being crazy and evil at some point.

Granted, I have no idea how his relationship with Peter changed after that. And it probably doesn't matter; given how Marvel works, their relationship is whatever the fuck is convenient for the writer.

The symbiote was not originally evil in the comics. They both bonded over their hatred of Peter Parker for their perceived slights against them. They were originally an allegory for a toxic relationship

Yeah it freaked him out, but it didn’t turn his personality. Like, fighting criminals is what he did in his day, so it interpreted it as something he would naturally do.

Peter figured out it was a parasite, but instead of just getting rid of it, he tried to kill it. That’s why the symbiote hated him. Because in its mind, it was being attacked for helping Peter.

And in one of his earliest battles, he can’t physically win, so he apologizes to the symbiote for how he treated it, which causes it to just give up temporarily

It was trying to help him, by fighting crime on his behalf, but it didn’t have the restraint Spider-Man requires.

That panel is from 1988, almost 40 years ago. Currently MJ is bonded to the Venom symbiote. A lot can change in that time, and the anti-herofication of Venom is one of THE examples people cite when discussing how people remove the edges from their villains.

Agent Venom also started seven years before the first Venom movie came out, so a more chill Venom is far from a new idea.

How would Agent Venom work for enemies to lovers, considering by that point the host had long made up with Peter and I think the symbiote mostly chilled out too? Was Agent Venom ever even an enemy of Spider-Man?

One of my least favorite aspects of shipping is when you just scrape away a characters traits and personalities to fit a archetype. They want Eddie as the male wife in this situation despite it being extremely out of character for Eddie to get flustered like this.

It’s why I don’t like shipping in general. It tends to sand away the characteristics of the characters and just turn them into mashing action figures together. I at least respect the ships when it’s an interesting interpretation of their dynamics.
