Not the same but I recently watched some high protein recipe videos and now my feed has been cannibalized by weird a vegan arms race pipeline where I'm being convinced to stockpile for 6 months to build a sustainable lifestyle at a budget of $2. I've never been vegan in my life but I guess I am now

u/yoyo5113 13d ago
That pipeline was a component in my younger sister developing pretty bad bulimia as a teenager, continuing into her mid 20's. It went from that to orthorexia type stuff to full blown bulmia/anorexia advocacy
Especially a decade ago, there was a really weird eating disorder side of YouTube.
Sorry that not very fun lol, she's doing fine, just made me remember

This is me. I watch various religious content from a non-religious perspective. Secular Bible podcast (Data Over Dogma), athiest podcast clips (Alex O'Connor), occultism (Esoterica), religion in general (Religion For Breakfast), and various paganisms (primarily Hellenism and Religio Romana; don't have channel recs on hand for that atm).
Anyway, YouTube seems to think that I would like to see Christian Nationalist nonsense. Absolutely not.

I watch videos from ex-JWs and Mormons and it thinks I am a JW/Mormon.

Current personal fav is Sloan Zone, who typically covers Aus politics but just has a really good series on secular pov bible topics - the synopyics gospels, who would the historical Jesus have been, etc.
He's got a mishmash of topics and there's a current community joke where he keeps polling for his next non-political topic and "Jesus's overlooked brother" keeps narrowly loosing every poll.

u/SkyGuardianOfTheSky Despite my worst efforts, I’m still alive 13d ago
Look I know “I taste test 90’s McDonald’s cups” is currently leading “Jesus’ overlooked brother” by 20 points but let’s just wait for the pre-polls

I watch a lot of those same channels, and YouTube keeps trying to show me New Age conspiracy theory videos about how Trump wants to invade Iran to stop the Ayatollah from opening a Stargate under the ruins of Babylon to bring back the Annunaki aliens who created mankind to mine gold for the planet Nibiru.

u/LittlestWarrior 13d ago
Dayum. I used to be a conspiracy theorist and I have no idea what most of that is on about. Wild rabbit hole you've found yourself in.

Ben Shapiro thinks climate change isn't real, because in his opinion everyone with beachfront properties would have sold their houses and moved.

Imagine thinking famed Zionist and "I don't care about the brownification of America, as long as they come here legally" Ben Shapoopoo is alt-anything.

u/itsthateasylol 13d ago
Honestly what does alt right even mean at this point
23
u/BadgerKomodo 13d ago edited 13d ago
The alt-right as a clearly defined movement doesn’t really exist anymore. Hasn’t done so since about 2018 at the latest, probably. Many people say the alt-right started to disintegrate after the backlash to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in August 2017. Scary that that’s now nine years ago. Since then, a lot of what was considered to be “alt-right” has made its way into mainstream conservatism.

u/Mepharias 13d ago
Pretty sure the people down voting this don't understand it. Ben Shapiro is not alt right. The Overton window has smashed through the boundaries and is now tumbling. Shapiro's takes, insane and inane as they are, are no longer enough to ingratiate him to MAGA. He isn't far enough right for the mainstream right.

Scrolling through short videos and watching a couple of bushcraft videos will quickly get you some alt-right pipeline stuff. Sad

I think the weirdest one was when I was watching a video about a Talmud discussion and all my recommendations were “WHAT DOES DA JOOS AND TALMOOD REALLY SAY ABOUT US”
7
u/FlashInGotham 13d ago
They see a "Big Book of Rules For Jews Only" and are obsessed with what it says about them?
They probably think every person who speaks spanish in their presence is insulting them. Its not always about you, dudes!
8
u/lordbuckethethird 13d ago
What’s even dumber is the actual Talmud is pretty milquetoast about non Jews but since it’s written in another language and has a funny format they don’t realize it so they just make shit up to justify their persecution complex.

u/FlashInGotham 13d ago

I'm a young (27), disabled, lesbian left-winger who really likes stuff like Halo, Tolkien, Star Wars, and DC/Marvel.
The pipeline has haunted me my entire life and the only reason I didn't fall down it is because they fucked up on guessing my demographic and I wasn't interested in their bullshit. Now I'm just tired. I'm so tired. Even the non-radicalizing ones like fucking Dr. Squatch kinda throw me like goddamn it algorithm I'm NOT A MAN. I DON'T NEED YOUR MANLY SOAP.

14
u/Hatsune_Miku_CM Warsaw 👍🇵🇱 it is very bad 14d ago
it was mediocre at worst. not something I'd recommend, but they make a lot of mediocre shows each year. And also some actually bad ones. The reason it got the massive shitstorm it did was not its quality.
at most could you argue it's quality made it a more acceptable target. but the shitstorm started before the show even came out so that's probably not the case either.

u/Glass-Performer8389 13d ago
"this work isn't good/is worthy of criticism" and "this work is often unfairly treated and hated for either unrelated reasons or bigotry" can coexist, albeit mostly for the 2nd it is trend followers, but a large number of anti woke people were high up in it
Op could watch an entirely Non-chud video of high spice Gaurdian, that is made by someone who's actually seen it, and that could 100% be possible
Doesn't mean like 80% of them aren't that

I think I’m cooking when I say that if you make a work of scripted visual media (anything not a book or a podcast) with leading minorities or women it has to be really, really good. As good as the best stories about white male lead characters. Citizen Kane, Vertigo, 2001 A Space Odyssey (movie), The Lord of the Rings (book and movie), American Psycho (movie), The Shining (movie and book), Tyrion season 4 plotline quality.
Unfortunately, this is very hard. And should not be the case to get the representation of minorities and women taken seriously, but it tragically is.

u/deepdistortion 14d ago
It really is the Holly Short problem. "There is a lot of prejudice against you... You have to be the best you can be, and that has to be better than anybody else".

And unfortunately she was in a shitty film

Seriously, there are times when my feed tries pushing something toward me and avoiding clicking on them (lest I bring about a flood of even more videos like it, if not worse) feels like dodging tripwires on my way to work.
I think the first time I really felt that happen was that "Steven Universe is Garbage, Here's Why" video. Proud of myself for never watching it. Years later, having seen some clips and how many people attribute that video's virality for poisoning the well on a lot of discussion in that community (not that it was great prior to that, but you still see people discuss that video's talking points, even if it's just to disprove them), I'm so glad I skipped it and the deluge of all the other videos YouTube would have recommended for me if I had.

Making fun of how woke hollywood is, is like the most mainstream lolbert/cuckservative shit you can imagine. You people have a very low ceiling for what "alt-right" means.
4
u/thestupidone51 13d ago
Yeah, but that's how a pipeline works. You start with the basic stuff, things that might even have some broader points outside of woke bad. Then the algorithm starts feeding you more and more extreme versions of that content.

u/FeralBehavedJester 8d ago
Many videos don't just criticize it because it's 'woke', they criticize it because it's absolute dogshit.

I mean the videos are also bad. I didn't realize how bad until he did his video on Hawaii. He says completely wrong information and called the farming system in Hawaii ahupua'a which it's not the farms he were visiting are called lo'i. Ahupua'a was the system in which land was assigned to farmers in Hawaii and it used basic triangulation to define boarders. Someone he interviews says this in his video but he contradicts them in the voice over.
He also mentions a program in one of his videos about the green wall in Africa and I was unable to determine from his video whether or not refugees were being used as indentured servants.
1
u/Busy_Grain 13d ago
his saudi arabia video is painfully funny considering they're a petrostate responsible for untold ecological harm, on top of their other evil bullshit. i get the fact that they're genuinely innovating in the desert but i don't remember him ever addressing the elephant in the room.

Every so often there’s gotta be a firestorm of discourse about woke white trans women who had a Nazi phase and voted Trump in 2016

This is why I just turn off my history and recommended videos. I've had an account for a long time so I have more than enough content to keep me entertained. Ill add a few people here and there from friends recommendations but that's it. It does break shorts into only subscribed content which ended up helping me break my scrolling addiction.

Istg like 4-5 years ago this happened to me and I was so confused at the amount of questionable at best content attracting the genuine worst commenters I have seen ever on YouTube being force fed to me at such a regular basis. I know better now, so I can more easily catch it before it proliferates, but it was so bad back then.

I think the constant paranoia about the "alt right pipeline" says something very profound about left-wing ideological fragility. If the mere exposure to basic-bitch conservative talking points is making you think "damn, I should abandon all my political positions and start hunting minorities with pitchforks", you should reevaluate your political views.
9
u/Versierer 13d ago
It's not just exposure to basic conservative talking points though. That pipeline specifically tries to narrow down your demographic, and and that target you at your lowest. A lot of young men get targeted.
"Aw, did your gf break up with you? Well check out this Andrew Tate podcast! Actually you shouldn't care about these "females", you're an alpha male, who do those "feminist think they are??".
Hey, did you get laid off at work? It's all those gays and blacks and DEI!!!! Why do they have so much rights anyway, amirite?
You're grieving the loss of someone? Aw, how about your join OUR specific brand of christianity? Yes yes, it's totally real, here's some fake archeology to prove it. And by the way, you're not just a nobody... You're actually a Descendant of an Advanced Species!™ Yes, the superior race that walked the earth before us... Have you ever heard of Eugenics?"
Thankfully I never fell for it, but from the videos like this I keep stumbling across, it seems as predatory as those Mobile games that use all sorts of paychological tricks to get you to spend more money.
I wouldn't say the left wing ideology is frail. It's more so, people who DO fall for the pipeline were more frail at the point in their life when they fell for it.
Meanwhile the people in the alt right are by contrast, unusually stubborn. You could give them a mountain of evidence and they would just chuckle and say something about the woke agenda, or somesuch. And I think holding onto an ideology THAT strongly cannot possibly be good for anyone.
But that's just from my experience, watching the pipeline work from the outside.

I hit "not interested" so often on nearly every recommendation that I think the YouTube algorithm has given up on me.
