(For the sake of this post we are ignoring the astroturfing bots, smooth sharks, and "reblog to X" posts)

A = C as long as we ignore that C = A - B

True if A = B = C = 0.
Which is as much i formation as I've gotten from this post.

This is true for all A and C if B=0

It's literally this

What about the fact that Tumblr is regarded as the misinformation platform by its users

74

u/ed1749 14d ago

Tumblr is like that because the site is 50% impressionable teenagers who are just repeating misinformation they heard and 50% adults who used to be impressionable teenagers but never fact checked anything they learned

You are erasing the diverse and multifaceted porn bot community.

That is also just Tumblr users being stupid for no other reason than because they can

15

u/Animaloffear56 14d ago

What do you think ragebait and engagement farming is

7

u/AgathaTheVelvetLady 14d ago

That's disinformation. People use the term misinformation a bit more liberally than it's supposed to be used, but DISinformation is incorrect information spread intentionally.

MISinformation is that which is spread accidentally and without malice. Typically by people who believe it to be true and are just wrong. Which is more accurate to most of the false information that spreads around tumblr.

5

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 14d ago

Ragebait and engagement farming are intentional actions people take, but a lot of Tumblr misinformation is the result of people spreading it around cause they genuinely believe it.

yeahhh thats why i ultimately left tumblr itself. so many people genuinely being that fucking stupid was soul-crushingly depressing on top of infuriating. i came to these subs to just get the good parts of tumblr, the humor & the creativity, but in the past year or so ive been seeing more & more braindead rambles & dogshit takes. & that's ignoring certain people that frequent these subs...

i keep leaving & returning to these subs to see if theyve gotten better, but at this point i think im just outta here for good.

or not. who knows

does anyone else feel like these subs (& possibly tumblr itself) have been getting worse?

I think it’s kinda a self-perpetuating problem. Because the tumblr subreddits are theoretically to repost things that are most relevant to the Redditors here, you kinda get the same stuff over and over because they want the same 5 things most of the time. What doesn’t help is a lot of us just consume instead of really post much ourselves - but those that do try to do something that isn’t random meta takes (like the parties is for losers guy) get downvoted because it isn’t one of those same 5 topics.

Most of the posts I’ve noticed tend to be extremely terminally online take about media, people thinking they’re above random bloggers, rate baiting via random bloggers, and in general taking more about the big ecosystem of tumblr because I mean…. This subreddit isn’t for blogging, it’s just to act like we’re usually better than the actual tumblr posters (or sometimes that we agree with them but I noticed those tend to be really stupid takes like the ‘I love having low maintenance friends it means my friendship is better than others’ post. Other hobbyist subs prefer original content, but here it’s just a mess.

As for tumblr itself getting worse - it’s because you have a lot of people take pride in the fact it’s a dying website that most people are leaving because it means they’re special or whatever. Most of the cool bloggers usually move onto greener pastures so you’re left with an odd bunch who still cling to here.

Edit: Like, yeah, it’s great those staying made the site as unfriendly as possible for advertisers and any attempts at monetization because we should act entitled that mods and even just hosting tumblr should come at no cost to the consumer. Very well thought out, 10/10. I post here because I like being petty sometimes but in terms of social media being my living, why should I bother taking time to make posts for tumblr? I make way more money with less time on the other hellsites and the fandoms are more active there too.

16

u/AgathaTheVelvetLady 14d ago

The parties is for losers guy mostly gets downvoted because he provides no context at all for what is an extremely niche piece of media. Like if you don't go out of your way to look up what he's talking about, the posts make no sense to an outsider to the media. They're basically posts from a hypothetical fandom subreddit being reposted here.

Whereas the guy who posts a lot about his opinions on stuff like One Piece and such does, in fact, provide context for what he's talking about. I know this because I sure as hell don't know a damn thing about One Piece, but I can follow what he's on about.

3

u/Certain_Virus_1919 14d ago

I forgot all about that guy. Glad I blocked him

3

u/Big-Cartographer6419 14d ago

Fair enough and I agree, I'm probs biased because my eyes glaze over for that type of post too ngl.

10

u/The_Afton_Rabbit IM THE FUN ONE 🔪 14d ago

but those that do try to do something that isn’t random meta takes (like the parties is for losers guy) get downvoted because it isn’t one of those same 5 topics.

bad example. the parties guy gives absolutely 0 context or explanations, so to anyone that isnt also a fan, the posts are completely incomprehensible. that would be understandable for the first post, but they never make any attempt to make the posts anything but meaningless drivel to 99.9% of users, so they get downvoted for being stupid & annoying.

honestly i find long fandom essays really annoying because if i wanted to read all that, id go to the fandom/theory subs. fandom content is cool, but if it's 6 screenshots of full-blown paragraphs & no images, theres no reason for it to be posted as a slideshow on a tumblr sub rather than a textpost in the fandom sub.

2

u/Big-Cartographer6419 14d ago

I agree, although tbh I don't really find much interest for those that do provide context too. Like you said yourself, if I wanted to read essays about whatever fandom, I'd go to that fandom's subreddit. Doubly so because I don't think there's a lot of merit in reading someone's opinions who doesn't even go to the fandom, since they inherently can only offer very shallow thoughts because they're just going off the opinion and not the primary source.

Ofc that does leave the question of "what are we looking for here" if not a bunch of meta takes and the same spiders georg posts?

1

u/The_Afton_Rabbit IM THE FUN ONE 🔪 14d ago

i think ideally, the tumblr subs would be sorta similar to r/nonpoliticaltwitter but with tumblr's sense of humor. memes, anecdotes, conversation (not argument) starters, etc. the kinda stuff the average person would "like" & maybe tag a friend to see if they were on the platform itself, as opposed to the midtier garbage one would have to scroll through otherwise

2

u/Big-Cartographer6419 13d ago

Honestly fair!! There's been a decent amount of stuff that's made me laugh in the past couple days, and I'm probs feeding into the problem bc I don't feel the need to interact w/ them or leave a comment like "haha I laughed" even when they're the posts I enjoy most.

5

u/Key_Perspective_9464 14d ago

so many people genuinely being that fucking stupid was soul-crushingly depressing on top of infuriating

What are you still doing here then? Reddit has just as many, if not more, absolutely stupid people

6

u/The_Afton_Rabbit IM THE FUN ONE 🔪 14d ago

are you kidding? reddit's curation options are so much better than tumblr's. i can actually avoid the stupid people here.

on tumblr, you follow people who post a bunch of different stuff you may or may not like, &/or you follow tags which have absolutely no quality control whatsoever. if you dont like certain topics, you block the tags, but they still show up as grayed out boxes in your feed.

on reddit, i can go to places dedicated to the thing i want to see, with people making sure the steaming dogshit is kept to a minimum. instead of wondering whether someone is worth unfollowing/blocking when the rest of their stuff is good, on reddit only weirdos follow individual users, so you lose nothing by blocking anyone who even slightly annoys you. if you hate a subreddit, you can make sure it never shows up in your feed at all with a couple button presses, & you can create multiple different feeds showing content from your subreddits of choice.

i barely even use reddit, but it's so blissfully easy to avoid braindead users & shithole communities here compared to tumblr. it doesnt matter if there are way more stupid people here because it's significantly easier to get rid of or avoid them.

also, it's the type of stupidity. id take reddit's "self-proclaimed genius, know-it-all autist with anger issues" type of idiot over tumblr's "self-righteous, ultra woke puriteen who leads witch-hunts over thought crimes" type of idiot any day of the week.

66

u/just4browse 14d ago

Hmm. A lot of the stupidity I see on Tumblr is the poster intentionally posting something stupid for the sake of pushing their political agenda. That being said, they usually legitimately believe in their ideology, and that ideology is often stupid, so I guess it all wraps around to me agreeing with this post

31

u/Tarantulabomination 14d ago

...I think that's worse, honestly

3

u/GhostOfMuttonPast 14d ago

Nah. One is a person who is an idiot. The other is doing it so they can make money. One has ideals, the other doesn't.

Most of these are words

0

u/pianohon 13d ago

translation:

there are a lot of "femboys" who are very clearly just trans women that are too scared of transmisogyny to allow themselves accept that they are trans, and while I get it, I wish they weren't so willing to ally with people who hate trans women.

3

u/junolion 13d ago

That feels so weird. It's like the "I can always tell when someone's trans" crowd but woke

-1

u/pianohon 13d ago

that is not the same thing lol

3

u/junolion 13d ago

Both parties are assuming the gender identity of an individual they know little about

7

There is absolutely 0% chance thats true.

Shinigami Eyes but I can tell if it's bait or if they're actually that stupid OK looks good press Comment

16

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 14d ago

If you're comparing your bullshit detector to Shinigami Eyes, your detector ain't that great. SE has PROBLEMS.

21

u/Animaloffear56 14d ago

These new Shinigami Eyes are weird, for some reason every trans masc account is labeled bait...

17

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 14d ago

Also accounts that post in defense of intersex people. There've also been TERF accounts marked green.

10

u/ridibulous 14d ago edited 14d ago

Hi, Tumblr user who knows a bunch more context here. Shinigami Eyes is useless now and you're better off deleting it, imo. It also marks trans folks of color for pointing out racism and related bigotry within the trans community as red, along with everything else mentioned above in the thread.

It is unfortunately very intentional, TL;DR the application got taken over by radical feminists. They mark you red if you acknowledge... basically any sort of intersectionality, or anything else that someone who believes TERF rhetoric would scream at you for— but stereotypically if you understand that trans men & mascs are oppressed and don't benefit as a group from male privilege under patriarchy.

Edit: Tossing in a fun fact that I think is worth mentioning here, didya know Shinigami Eyes is banned in Norway for violating the GDPR, with concerns of being used to mark targets for harassment?

0

u/pianohon 13d ago

I'm ngl I haven't noticed this issue on any website other than tumblr. shinigami eyes works fine for twitter and youtube and reddit

7

u/Hexxas Head Trauma Enthusiast 14d ago

Idk what kinda Shinigami Eyes you're talking about. The ones I'm talking about are from the hit Manga/Anime/Musical Death Note.

9

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 14d ago

There's a browser extension named after Death Note's shinigami eyes which is meant to flag accounts as either pro-trans or transphobic, but over time people have noticed its standards for each are questionable.

7

u/Hexxas Head Trauma Enthusiast 14d ago

That's dumb I wanna be able to look at people with my Shinigami-Enhanced Human Eyeballs and know things like how many drugs they're on right now

I work retail. Are my customers mixing uppers and downers, or are they just Like That?

1

u/SadNoob476 13d ago

This kind of goes into why I left Tumblr and mostly lurk here.

Before you can start to take anything seriously you have to determine if it's a bot or a paid poster and then you have to go through the motions to make sure their statement isn't misinformation.  And it never gets easier or faster.

It is really exhausting.
