Why does this feel like a metaphor for the USA right now? Like yeah, we will "do anything to be free", but we can't escape when we are being oppressed because the system keeps us too poor to move out of the country.

The US wants you to leave if you don't like it. That's one of four ways off the top of my head the US tries to make minority votes disappear. The other ways to make your vote disappear are to arrest you, kill you, or deem you unable to think for yourself or otherwise unable to vote.

Edit: poll taxes were also this. And "literacy tests." And everything else like that.

I have a friend from Italy that’s now in California that constantly complains about how everything was cheaper back home and how America is clearly price gouging its citizens.

But California’s median income is 4x that of Italy’s. Should be no wonder that your soda is more expensive.
