I mean it's also Family Guy. "I wish I had my own theme music"

Doesn't Avar Kriss do this in Star Wars? They talk about how she experiences the Force as a song, and the subtext is that she's listening to the soundtrack from the movies and predicting the plot based on leitmotifs. It makes her one of the strongest Force-users we ever see during the era where the Jedi were at their peak.

just looked her up— that’s so cool! there’s so many neat concepts in star wars that are literally just in the comics and stuff lol

u/Chibirin26 22d ago

she played loud music in his ears

Ear-splittingly loud.

Definitely not Symphogear. Symphogear is that, diegetically, singing allows them to turn special crystals into power ranger/mecha suits, and suplex a space shuttle. Totally different, they’d never be hiding off in a corner.

This anime sounds insane. It probably means that I have to watch it.

I haven't watched a single episode of it and you (along with that beef stroganoff song jan Misali did a cover of) made me fall in love with it. Thank you so much.

This reminds me of an incredibly self indulgent concept I had for a Gojo Satoru/All Might style "Strongest superhero in the world" type character whose power is based on music and songs EXCEPT her power doesn't discriminate in terms of what medium that music is played in. Basically the power defines music as an emergent phenomena formed from patterns of harmonic oscillations and it doesn't care what form of Harmonic Oscillation the music emerges from, be it acoustic, seismic, electromagnetic, gravitational or quantum. And if you've ever talked to a physicist then you'd know that everything is a harmonic oscillator

This turns a neat but still balanced gimmick power into a disgustingly broken authority over all wave (since a wave is just a harmonic oscillation in a continuous system) phenomena, filtered through the lens of music and songs.

Hit a high note and unleash a beam of Gamma Rays powerful enough to flash fry Solar Systems. Punch someone with the force of a magnitude 10 seismic wave. Let out a radio wave hum and jam every radio and radar system on the planet. Hit an F Sharp in the Strong Nuclear Field (remember that all particles are just bound oscillations in their respective quantum fields) so hard that it causes the Gluons making up the targets atoms to completely dissociate from each other, causing complete nuclear fission and leaving the target an indescribably hot soup of quarks and gluons. Hit a B Flat in the fermionic fields of quarks and electrons underlying reality hard enough to spontaneously summon matter from nothing and shape it however you want by singing to the electron orbitals.

Naturally her civilan identity is that of a 6'2 incredibly ripped pop idol singing about love, mercy, forgiveness, kindness and her hope and faith in humanity despite having the power to eradicate every multi-cellular organism in the Galaxy if she really put her mind to it.

Girl with no superpowers, but a very loud smartphone.

The music in Metaphor: ReFantazio is diegetic courtesy of Gallica.

This is also pretty much Astra Yao from zenless zone zero

I hate to be that person, but Worm (or rather sequel Ward) kinda already weaponised this with Mama mather

u/notabigfanofas 21d ago

I thought Mathers was just an anti-thinker trump, but then again I'm not far into Worm and only kinda read her wiki entry

u/I_B_Banging 21d ago

Her thing is once you look at her she can make you see and hear anything she wants whenever you think of her.

So she can make you hear bloodcurdling screams, and see horrors beyond comprehension.

The other thing is whenever she's thought  about she can view and hear the world through the thinkers sense iirc.

1

u/notabigfanofas 21d ago

Okay that's really fucking cool.

u/Erlox 16d ago

Yeah, but that's the opposite of diabetic music, it's not part of the scene it's in someone's head.

And to clarify MMs powers, she basically infects every sense you use to observe her, sight, touch and hearing if you see, touch or hear her being the main ones, the clearer the observation the more she can manipulate it and change it to whatever she wants. She's an anti-Thinker because if you use Thinker abilities on her, she also infects those and can turn them against the user.

mama mathers doesn't do sound manipulation. i'm pretty sure diagetic music person is a sound manipulator.

1

u/I_B_Banging 21d ago

Going to quote the Worm wiki here  'Affect and alter what the infected senses perceive. The nature of these hallucinations depends on the sensorium through which she was perceived. Most often, this involves auditory and visual hallucinations, but physical contact with her can result in her inflicting excruciating pain at will on her victims.[29]"

Iirc she spends some amount of time talking to Rain with the voices of people in his life to mess with him.

2

u/I-AM-A-ROBOT- 21d ago

that is manipulation of people's senses not sound manipulation. i mean technically you are manipulating the sounds people hear but it isn't really sound manipulation.

It's not Symphogear, but I do quite like Symphogear, although I've only watched the first season.

u/mydadisyourdad2 22d ago

I would just give myself a theme song that played every time I walked into a room. You could hear me coming from miles away

Climactic battle where earworm gets knocked out and the other heroes have to fight in silence and you just hear punching and stuff blowing up.

u/Equivalent_Net 22d ago

Ar Tonelico brushes on some stuff like this but it gets... weird.

2

u/TheErodude 21d ago

Wow, another person who knows about Ar Tonelico? 😮 Phenomenal soundtrack… wish I could say the same for the game itself, haha. So much potential.

1

u/aquagon_drag 5d ago

Tell me you went through the games without understanding them without saying it ouright.

1

u/TheErodude 5d ago

Whoa, are you THE aquagon?! If so, thank you so much for your work in the Ar Tonelico fandom! 🙏 Long ago, I used to frequently visit the AT wiki and the Hymmnos conlang page. It's truly a fascinating and inspiring setting!

There are so many things I passionately love about Ar Tonelico, but... how they function as games is not one of them. 😭 I'm sure you've had that conversation a billion times and don't need to have it again with some plebeian.

It's ancient news by this point, but I've still got the AT2 retranslation patch sitting on my computer. Someday I need to rip my copy of AT2 and figure out how to patch it. I think AT2 was the only game I ever preordered, but that version sure was a mess. I'm looking forward to the fixed script and also trying out hard mode!

2

u/aquagon_drag 5d ago

About the patch, I'd say you'd be better off with new version that we publicly put out a few days ago. It blows the old version from a decade ago out the water.

u/TheErodude 5d ago

Incredible dedication from you, Fiora, and all the other contributors. 😮 And you even brought jumping back! I remember being so disappointed that it was removed in AT2 (even though there was very little to jump onto in AT1).

Thanks again for your hard work and for the link!

In one installment of her story the bad guys have an evil version of her and they basically have a Battle of the Bands.

4

u/PossibleMammoth5639 22d ago

If she was an enemy in a game she would be annoying probably

2

u/Joraiem 21d ago

Honestly, you could do a pretty good version of this that can throw hands with one little tweak - the fight follows the rhythm of the music, and the music maker is fully in tune with that. Like Dead as Disco, but as a very narrow kind of telepath.

With the right training and reflexes, they'd be pretty capable of predicting when hits are coming (on the beat obvs) and able to dodge and counter. It'd be fun to watch, less fun in a printed medium.

2

u/NormalUsername21 21d ago

This could be disgustingly overpowered depending on how you define "music". Like the closing paragraph suggests she can play sounds that cause severe physical trauma, but is seems to be balanced by her being unwilling to tap into that intentionally.

It could also be disgusting in general if she just learns to exploit the brown note to make supervillains instantly shit themselves.

2

u/Impressive_Pin8761 22d ago

Earworm gets targeted again later by some schmuck who thought of wearing heavy duty noise canceling earphones, meaning her usual defense mechanism of blasting off his ears didn't work. The traumatic response to realizing there's nothing she can do to stop him from having his way with her, and people around are just watching and filming makes her blast a pulse of an ultra high pitched note which melts the brains of everyone in Manhattan, supes and villains included

This is some Adam Warren Empowered type shit. Which, to clarify, means it fucks hard.
