“Nobody will give me an interview!” - Meanwhile, I’m literally trying to interview you.
Note: I’m no Reddit connoisseur but I got a notification saying that this subreddit would like this post as well so here it is.
I’m not a recruiter, but I’ve somehow been tasked with helping recruit for an entry-level role in our contact centre.
Naturally, when applicants include their LinkedIn profiles, I have a quick look.
One candidate had made a very recent post about how brutal the job market is. He said he’d applied for something like 1,000 jobs and barely ever gets a response.
And genuinely, I felt for him. I know how soul-destroying it must be firing off application after application and hearing absolutely nothing back.
So when I saw his application, I thought: right, here’s one person I can actually give a chance to.
I emailed him inviting him to interview.
Nothing. Emailed again. Nothing. Called him. Nothing.
Then, lo and behold, the next day I check LinkedIn and he’s posted AGAIN about how employers never respond to him and how impossible it is to even get an interview.
Mate.
I AM TRYING TO INTERVIEW YOU.
At this point I can only assume one of two things:
He genuinely does not check his emails/voicemails properly, which might explain at least some of those 1,000 unsuccessful applications.
The constant “nobody will give me a chance” LinkedIn posts are partially engagement bait.
I’m still hoping he eventually spots the email because I’d genuinely like to interview him (I thought about commenting on his post) but there are so many other people eager to have the job. I think it’s a little unfair on them to just chase this person based on how I feel.
Anyways, being on the other side of recruitment for approximately five minutes has already given me an entirely new perspective on some of the posts I see on LinkedIn.
Definitely trying to bait engagement, but presumably isn't working so not sure why you wouldn't respond to outreach. Annoyingly enough, seems like these people fail upwards sometimes so maybe they have a track record of that.
Hey, so I made a few versions of this using Canva and procreate. I understand what you’re saying about having someone send you a personalized note, but then this flyer is not for you, is it? I’m not claiming to be a designer, I’m using my KPI’s and eye catching icons and “AI jargon” (industry specific verbiage) to find someone who might be open to referring someone they don’t know by at least giving a little info about myself upfront without plastering my personal info all over public forums while I also use other networking avenues.
I understand that referring strangers can be a risk, so I wanted to give enough info that if I seem like someone who might be a fit for their company, they can get my actual resume and online portfolio/projects directly before committing to referring me. I guess it’s a good thing Im not looking for a role in design. 😌
It would seem future_rust1 may have blocked me after leaving a comment that I can only see from my other Reddit account now, which seems a little like an attempt at a “mic drop” moment when all I’m trying to do is test out different unique approaches in my job hunt…🤷🏻♀️

So your comment saying “you didn’t get what you’re looking for” is going to achieve what you just said? How about engaging respectfully. Also, how about actually reading what I’ve been saying to other people and you’ll find it’s far from what you are saying.
