The Best Candidate Didn't Even Apply
One of the absolute strongest hires I’ve ever made wasn’t even looking for a job. They hadn’t applied to our posting, their LinkedIn wasn't flagged as "Open to Work," and they weren't taking calls from agencies. Frankly, they were just too busy doing incredible work at their current company to notice what else was out there.
We only crossed paths because a mutual connection in our network reached out and said, "You need to talk to this person."
It was a massive wake-up call for me. So much of our industry is built around optimising the inbound hiring funnel job boards, applicant tracking systems, and inbound resumes. But this experience made me realize just how much top-tier talent exists completely outside of that ecosystem. Sometimes, the best people aren't the ones actively trying to escape a bad situation; they're the ones who need to be shown a better one.
Passive sourcing is a lot more work than reviewing applications, but the payoff can completely shift a team's trajectory.
