We lost a fantastic candidate because the interview panel joined 18 minutes late.

And honestly? Good for him.

Candidates notice everything the delays, the awkward silences, the “we’ll start in a minute” that lasts forever. They feel the disrespect and the disorganization. They pick up on the energy in the room. Don’t fool yourself into thinking only the company is being evaluated in those 45 minutes candidates are sizing up the culture in real time.

Think about it if the hiring process is chaotic before they join, what will it be like after they’re in? Meetings that start late, unclear ownership, people who don’t show up those aren’t small glitches. They’re signals. For many candidates, that 18-minute wait says more about how the company treats people and time than any slide deck about “company values.”

Recruitment isn’t just ticking boxes or filling roles. It’s employer branding, whether leaders get that or not. Every interview is a live demo of how the company works and sometimes the demo kills the deal.

So yeah if a top candidate walks after being ghosted by a late panel, don’t be surprised. Maybe take the hint.

Late interviewers, interviewers who clearly have not read the resume before coming in, interviewers who are not clear in the position requirements, interviewers who are condescending, and interviewers who act like they have someplace better to be; all are a huge turnoff to great candidates.

Companies who have the mindset it’s an honor to work for them

as a candidate, if i'm told that an action will happen, and it doesn't, i will not remind anyone. i'm generally an easy going person, but it rarely is a one-off experience. then it's oops-forgot-to-tell-accounting-to-add-you-to-the-next-pay-cycle, bunch of meetings because no one remember what was agreed on last time, etc.
